Hi Everyone -

We are running SharePoint 2007 and I'm running Outlook 2007. I have alerts
set up that send me e-mails. When I try to open an alert from within Outlook
2007 I receive an error message "Cannot open this item". But when I go to
Webmail I'm able to open the item and see the contents.

Is this a security setting in Outlook 2007 or am I missing something or is
this a known issue with Outlook 2007?

Thanks-

Same problem here. I can get it to open these alerts in Outlook 2003 and if I
do that, since I'm on an Exchange account, I can go back to Outlook 2007 and
the alert will show up just fine. Almost like there is a block that 2007 but
that 2003 does not. This is also evident by the fact that if you view the
alert in OWA and then return to Outlook 2007 you can also view just fine.

I am going to call microsoft support and see what they have on file for this
because I cannot find it anywhere and I know everyone else has to be having
this problem as well. If i get a solution from them I will let you guys know.

We are also experiencing this problem. As it appears to be affecting anyone
with Sharepoint and Outlook 2007, it would be nice if Microsoft came out with
a fix for it.

I put in a call Friday about this and they said they had someone the other
day report it too but currently there isnt anything to fix it. They all
couldnt reproduce the problem but I asked them if they were running exchange
2003 and they wernt they were upgraded to 2007 and thats why it doesnt do it
for them.

Also just so you guys know, this problem also breaks activesync and windows
mobile 5 phones. As long as you don't open outlook2007 and sync your inbox
everything with sharepoint alerts works fine. As soon as you open outlook
2007 and sync your inbox and you have an alert present in your inbox your
active sync will no longer syncronize and will give a server error until you
remove the alert from your inbox. So Outlook 2007 is definatley the cause
because if you never open it and use webmail and or outlook 2003 all alerts
and active sync work properly.

They are supposed to call me soon so we will see what happens with this as
it's a huge issue and I plan to upgrade my office to 2007 soon, we already
purchased it but this is going to put it on hold.

Ok so far the troubleshooting has come to one thing breaking the alerts for
Outlook 2007. It's cached mode excahnge. If you disable chaced mode all the
alerts work fine. However activesync still breaks either way. So Microsoft is
still troubleshooting that issue, then If that doesnt fix the activesync
issue then I will put in another call for that.

Well that's good to know that it's not just me and that its a recognized
problem. Thanks for contacting Microsoft about this Chris! I hope they offer
a resolution soon.

same happened to us today. we are running SBS 2003/Exchange
2003/Outlook 2007/Outlook 2003/WSS 3.0.
aslos found that alerts don't work preoperly anyway. If you set an
alert for items created by you, you don't get any emails. 'Any changes'
works fine but we b=need something more specific.

I've come across the same issue today. Glad I found this thread. Keep
us posted if you hear back from MSFT. Thanks!
