Help! - Problem embedding in O'95

When I embed an Excel spreadsheet in a Word document, my system becomes
very non-responsive if I try editing the spreadsheet within the document.

By non-responsive I mean such things as not being able to type lower case
even though all caps is off; editing menu's popping up when you press ESC;
highlighting on and no way to deactivate without exiting the spreadsheet
portion of the document and reentering; slow response (a second or so) for
a keypunch to display; etc.

This may be an old problem, but I am a new user of MS Office suite and
would appreciate any help someone can give. I have had little luck with my
computer manufacturer's tech support and found no info in the MS Knowledge
Base related to this problem.

I also thought maybe I would just wait for my upgrade copy of Office'97 to
arrive to solve the problem. But based on the things I have been reading
about the product in this newsgroup as well as other places, I don't know
if I want to try '97 yet.

Most of all though, the problem has become very annoying in my day to day
activities.
