Hi,

When you're chatting to someone and they use an emoticon you haven't got, and you right-click and "add" it to your collection, is it actually stored on your drive in a folder somewhere? If so, can someone tell me where please?

MSN Messenger v8 btw.

Thanks,

Dylan.

Greetings Dylan,

It sure is. If you're looking to back them up, use this tool:
http://www.baisoft.it/msnbackup_english.asp

If you're looking for the exact location, are you using Windows Live Messenger 8.0 or 8.1?
They're drastically different in terms of how emoticons are stored.

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for that link. Worked a treat :)

Yeah, I wouldn't mind knowing the exact location though. Might come in handy. I'm using v8.1

Regards,

Dylan.

Hi,

For 8.1:

XP:
\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Messenger\windowsliveid\ObjectStore

Vista:
\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Messenger\windowsliveid\ObjectStore

Where username is your Windows username and windowsliveid is your Windows Live ID/Passport
e-mail address. Additionally, to see these folders in Explorer you may need to switch on
viewing hidden folders.

The custom emoticons are stored in the 'CustomEmoticons' folder and you'll see the various
other content in your account, like winks and backgrounds too. Starting in 8.1 you can
actually just copy your ObjectStore anywhere you wish as long as its still the same Windows
Live ID.
