It could be that somehow the cache of display pictures has been corrupted or otherwise
damaged in some way.
If you can be more specific about what's exactly happening when it crashes -- the error
message and if you're seeing the "Sorry for the inconvenience box, click the "click here"
link -- in the next screen, you'll see something like the following:
szAppName : msnmsgr.exe szAppVer : 6.1.0211.0 szModName : rpcrt4.dll
If you could reply back with what the szModName has in your error, would make it easier to
determine what the problem is.
However, you can simply try removing your entire Messenger cache you currently have and then
have Messenger re-generate it. To do so, firstly close down MSN Messenger if it's still
running (right-click on its icon in the notification area/system tray, by the clock and click
Exit), then click Start, then Run, type "%appdata%\Microsoft" and click OK. If you're using
some other Windows version besides Windows 2000 or XP, you'll need to manually go to the
C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft folder (or \Windows\Profiles\username\Application
Data\Microsoft if you're using profiles, where username is your username). Then right-click
on the MSN Messenger folder, choose Delete, confirm the operation and then simply restart
Messenger from the start menu.
Note that this will also remove any custom emoticons you have as well, so if you have some
special emoticons in there, let me know and we can save them before you do this (it gets more
complicated, so I won't write it here now).
