Can't sign into Live Messenger

For awhile now I've been unable to sign into the Live messenger client. When
I try I'm usually able to connect for a few seconds and then it disconnects.

What's weird is that I'm able to connect using the web client just fine.
Any ideas what could be causing this? Is there anyway to make the Live
messenger client connect the same way the web client does?
