They do not seem to be standard Windows files. See if you can find them on
your system, right click, select properties, and see if you can work out
what programme installed them.

I believe the files do not exist, and what you are seeing is normal -
perhaps creating by typographical errors in the programme's coding (the
same thing happened with system file checker back when WindowsMe first came
out).

I have not been able to find any evidence to the contrary. The files do
not exist according to Microsoft's DLL database, nor do they appear in
Technet, and an extensive web search and newsgroups search has not turned
up anything apart from other people looking for them.

Very weird. So maybe IE was supposed to have those files at one time,
but now they are gone? And MS doesn't have any mention of them?
Sometimes I just have to shake my head...

I have posted this same question in other groups, including the one for IE, but no answer so far.  Can anyone tell me what these files are, what they do, and can I restore them?  If so, how?

Thanks in advance,

Barry

Barry,

msinfo32 is the Microsoft System Information tool, this should be on your Windows 98 CD if that is your system. The application sits in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSINFO on my system. I have checked the Cabs and the 2 files that you mentioned do not reside in Win98SE.

Barry,

As a lark, could you try disabling your A/V (or temporarily uninstalling it)
and check to see if the office sysinfo still sees the files as being
missing? Strange as it sounds, I do see some previous issues with these
files being reported as missing (despite the fact that they aren't supposed
to be there) and the files weren't reported as being missing when the a/v
was disabled. The reason I suggest going so far as to uninstall it is that
many a/v solutions work by installing a file system driver that merely
stopping the scanning doesn't stop the file system driver. Overall, it is a
non-issue with regards to IE functionality, but I would like to track down
the issue to see if we can't find out why it is happening.

They don't reside on the beta IE6 files cabs or MSdn o/s CD's...they might originate from a third party..

Oops. I forgot to mention that I am using Windows XP. The System Information utility is part of Office, I think. Whatever the case, it does show the two files as "missing."
