Backups 2004 vs 2006

Is there a way to have Money 2006 show me the file path in the backup
prompt ?
For backups I use d:\Backups\M2004 and d:\Backups\M2006 folders.
Each month I create a new file in there so if I need to go back to ...
Mar 2006 I can recreate my file to that date. So I just chose backup
from the M2004 menu , backed up to the Oct file, then clicked on the x
in upper right to close Money and was prompted ( I have it set to prompt
me) to backup the file . When I exit it prompts me to backup and it
shows me the default path ( to the Oct2006 filename). Since I'm done
with Oct, I create a file for Nov and backup M2004 to the new nov2006
filename. Fine. Next time I backup the default file path is nov2006
until I change it - which I do monthly.
In M2006, I THOUGHT I was doing the same but since it doesn't show me
the path, I just noticed that when I choose BACKUP from the menu and
clicked on the dropdown to confirm the foldername, that it creates its
backup on my C drive - in the Money folder - not where I told it -
d:\Backups\M2006. I had to select d:\Backups\M2006 from the dropdown and
I tried it again - it keeps defaulting to the C drive Money folder. I
want my backups on my D drive ( in case my C drive dies - isn't that
what a backup is for !)
So M2004 and M2006 saves the everyday info in the Money folder - fine.
But when I back it up I want it to go to the same path on D everytime -
not C. Is that NOT an option in M2006 ? Anyone else been here already ?
And I'm mad at myself for not noticing it. Now I don't have an accurate
monthly snapshot for M2006 - I've been overwriting some of them and
unknowing renaming others - like:
June_2006-10-04_215758.mbf
June_2006-10-13_195226.mbf
June_2006-11-01_072501.mbf
And even when I did manually backup M2006, my intent was to overwrite
the ONE file for that month, as in M2004, not create different ones by
appending the date to the filename. So, Is this a setup option for me
somewhere or is this "how it is" with M2006.

Note the +++ line three lines into the description:
In Money 2006 Tools->Settings->BackupSettings, I suggest checking
x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money
Save in [+++specify the place on your D drive+++ ]
x Ask me before backing up each time*
x Compress Backup Files
Keep only the _20_most recent backup files [adjust to taste]
x Perform scheduled backups every _14_ days
Save in [a USB flash drive location]
x Ask me before backing up each time*
x Compress Backup Files
Keep only the _2_most recent backup files [adjust to taste,
but Money 2006 does not automatically trim to USB as it should]
Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your latest
backup (uniquely named by Money) to a CDR. With XP, this can be a
copy and paste operation. Otherwise use the burning software that
came with your CDR drive.
I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash rather than floppies. They
are bigger, so you don't have to swap media to back up. Plus
they are much more reliable (but not failure-proof).
* The reason I have Money ask me, is that I don't want to back up
each time I exit. If I went into Money 5 times in a day, I would not
want to back up 5 times, nor would I want to delete 5 other backup
files. You will be given the choice to BackUpNow or to Postpone. You
will also see a Settings button which would let you see and/or
change the destination for the backup without clicking into
Settings.

The locations you select. The adding of the date+time is how it is.
For the backups onto what it consider fixed hard drives ("Local
Disk" in Properties in Windows Explorer), Money will prune the
quantity properly. Setting that number to 1 for a hard drive seems
undesirable. Many people will unfortunately overwrite their only
good backup in the case of a problem when there is only one backup.
If Money 2006 considers the drive to be a "Removable Disk", it
unfortunately ignores the setting and will keep adding additional
backups while drive space remains.

So it's only from the MENU I can elect to specify D: and have it
remember ? As you may know, in M2004 I entered the filename including
location once and it remembered. I don't back it up daily, but even if I
did I would end up with "today's info" in C:\prgs files\moneyfolder and
my backup (nov2006) in D:\Money2004\ - at the backup prompt, it shows
me that info.
So in M2006 if I only do want the ONE file as a backup - as in
D:\backups\M2006\Nov2006", is there anyway to have it overwritten - just
ending up with nov2006 and NOT Nov2006_11_01, Nov2006_11_02,
Nov2006_11_03 each day ( if I did a backup each day) ?

I figure I've got the "everyday" data on C and a backup on D - that's
enough (if it does what I ask)
That's all I've ever had. If C dies - I could restore from D and every
year or so I backup the year from D to CD.

I expect the backup drive and folder to be remembered as long as
that drive is present whenever the backup is made.
Is your D: drive classed as a Local Drive or what when you look at
the properties with Windows Explorer?
If it is considered a local drive, I expect you could set the "every
time I close Money" backup to have only one if you say so. I don't
know what would happen if it was classed as a network drive. If it
is classified as removable, I think Money is expecting to perhaps be
expected to deal with the drive filling up and prompting for
swapping in another drive.

I would encourage more than one backup. Disk space is cheap.

It's a local drive. It's worked as I described since M2001 install. This
new filename action (using date to name the file for me) is new to me in
M2006. I've only ever backed up to my D:\Backups\Money\2004 (or M2006)
folder and in there I make one file per month per year then overwrite it
~weekly until month is over then onto next month's name. So at year end
when I do a directory for each program ( M2004and M2006) each folder
contains 12 files: for the 2005 folder there's Jan2005.mbf - thru
Dec2005.mbf. (same for 2001,2002,2003,2004). Then I backup to CD.

True - just keeping it simple. If C dies I have D, if D dies I have C.
If both get smoked by power supply etc, I have CD. I also have it /use
it laptop when I'm on the road, so I have that copy too.

prompted to " Backup?" and when I checked the SETTINGS , it looked OK. I
backed up the file and checked the folder and it shows the original file
" Nov2006.mbf " as well as this new one -
Nov2006_2006-11-01_193545.mbf , so I guess this will have to do and
then at the end of each month I'll rename the final one to Nov2006 and
delete the others.
