I have mappoint 2010 that I am installing. I have software assurance on
mappoint so I got the mappoint 2010 dvd for free and do not have a product
key for it that I am aware of anyways. I installed mappoint 2010 and the
installation seems to go just fine. Then I try to start mappoint 2010 and it
says that I have to activate it. I click next and the then get a screen that
just says "click next", however the next button is disabled and I only have
back and cancel buttons. What am I suppose to do?

The free trial and retail versions require an activation key. They will
work for 60 days in trial mode, but give you a "nag" screen at startup.

I would contact your software supplier or Microsoft if you think you
should have a fully functional version of MapPoint, and they've only
given you a trial version.

Richard, I believe you are incorrect in your statement. The software
assurance version has never required a product key (at least 2009 and
earlier). I have also installed this 2010 version on other computers and had
no problems and have not been asked to activate or ever enter a product key.

Even if I had a product key to enter it would do me no good on this one
computer as the activation process never gives me a spot to put it in. The
activation process starts with like a welcome screen saying that I need to
activate. I click next. One the next screen it is blank except for a line
that says to click next. At the botton of the screen I have a back button, a
cancel button and a disabled next button. So I have no where to put in any
number and have no way of moving forward.

This is some kind of installation problem/bug that appears to only be
affecting this computer. I had a problem getting 2009 to install on this
same computer, but finally got a utility to do some kind of reset from
microsoft to fix the problem for 2009, but that utility no longer can be run.
It says that it is expired if I try to run it.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling mappoint as well. and gotten the
same result. I am afraid that I will need to open a case with Microsoft
again and pay for support on this when it is not my fault and just
microsoft's #$%^& software.

Could it be that the particular copy of Windows on that pc is failing the
"genuine Windows" validation test? maybe you can go to the ms web site to
check this.

It is a valid copy of windows xp. It is the oem version that came with the
laptop from Dell. From what I can tell the software and windows update seems
to think that it is an authentic version. So I do not think that this is the
problem.

--snip--

Maybe installation tries to write some registry values and fails due to
permission problems ? I've used sysinternals regmon for diagnosing such
problems. Or persmission problems with some file, filemon could reveal
those.

I did the install logged in as administrator so I should have full rights to
everything.

Was there ever a solution to this problem?

Everytime I spend HOURS trying to get a Microsoft programing failure I
remember poor PC guy in the Apple ads.

Legit copy of Mappoint 2010. "click next for activation" and the next button
is greyed out.

I think that if you are a bad person, God sends you to hell. Then tells you
to get to heaven you have to get a Microsoft application to work. Of course,
you spend eternity in Hell.

I'm going to keep saving up for a Mac.

In the meantime, can a good soul help out? It seems it's easier to find the
secret behind the Universe than it is to determine why MS programs don't work.

I have not found a solution yet, however I do have a case open with microsoft
technical support currently. If I get a solution, I will update this posting.

I had a conversation with Microsoft’s tech support (actually I did a lot of
yelling because they have been very unresponsive to this problem and I had to
make several calls to them to get a response and case update). Anyways,
this is what I found out. Other people are having the same problem that we
are. This is basically the same problem that we had with the 2009 version.
Microsoft thought that they had fixed the problem in map point 2010, but
obviously have not. They thought that they had a patch that would fix the
problem, but it does not work. They are still working on the problem. Their
reset tool fix that works for map point 2009 does not work with 2010. It
sounds like it could be a week or more before they have a fix. Their only
work around at this point in time is to suggest that we totally wipe out the
computer reinstall windows and then install map point 2010 first. I told
them that this was unacceptable. Their only other option at this time is to
return our money.

Terry,

Don't know how much this will help. But a clean install of W7 (x64), then
M2010, has mappoint 2010 working perfectly. Installed office 2007 and m2010
still works fine.

Maybe it an conflict with office and the order it needs to be installed
in...who knows.

Dino, Sorry I did not reply earlier to your post. I did not get a
notification that there had been a new posting.

In my original discussion with Microsoft tech support they were aware of the
issue, however they did not have a solution other than to wipe out the entire
computer reinstall windows and mappoint as you suggested or to refund you
money you paid for mappoint.

They now have a tool available called mappoint 2010 reset tool that fixes
the problem. However, for some stupid reason they set an expiration date on
the tool so you have to request a new copy of the tool every time that you
want to run the tool.

I did run into some problems with the tool just hanging when I ran it. In
order to get the tool to run correctly I had to disconnect the laptop that
was having the problem from our network. I then had to reboot the computer
and log in as the local computer administrator. I then needed to have an
internet connection which I got via a verizon internet access card (If I
reconnected our network cable the mappoint reset utility would lock up).
Once I was logged in as local administrator, disconnected from our network
and had internet access via the verizon card, the utlity would work. You
click the diagnose button and it runs for a few seconds and displays some
information. Once it is done running you can then start mappoint with no
problems.

For anyone experiencing this problem I would think that you should be able
to contact microsoft techsupport and get the mapoint 2010 reset utlity for no
charge.
