I have a list of 10144 properties in the north east of England I'm trying to
map and analyse with MapPoint 09 Europe trial. My dataset is held in Excel, I
have 10144 records, each is unique, each is confirmed as mapped by Mappoint.
I can create a map of the properties with pushpins accurately, but when I
overlay a map of say - count of properties by postcode sector - over the map
(with or without pushpin series) MP fails to map the data against all of my
postcode sectors.
For example I know for a fact, and I can see with my pushpins that I have
240 properties in TS10 1 Postcode sector but when I convert my pushpins to a
shaded area series MP tells me I have nothing in that sector and colours it
in grey/blank. This is repeated for several sectors?
Anyone any ideas what's wrong? Is the trial limited in some fashion? Do I
need to create a specific column of data in my data source that will return
postcode sector?
Regards,
Steve
I can plot them on the map with push pins correctly in TS10 5 postcode
sector but I cannot convert the dataset in Mappoint to a shaded area or
bubbles because I get the following error:
"Data in the field or column you have chosen does not exist or is not
appropriate for the selected geographic unit. Select a different field or
column, or geographic unit, and try again. "
All I want to do at it's simplest is to do a count of property id numbers in
the postcode sector.... and i don't understand what Mappoints problem is with
my data!!?? It can map individual postcodes in the sector with no problems,
but not the postcode sector???
Very strange! Anyone any ideas??

Have you tried plotting it at the TS10 ??? level rather than the TS10
5?? level?

Many thanks to David Broom for the answer in a separate email. If anyone
else that visits this forum has a similar issue I suggest they read this
forum topic from mapforums.com.

It looks like a fundamental issue with Mappoint 2009 that it has serious
issues to aggregate data up to higher postcode level (sector, district, area)
than just postcode (from postcode level data in my respect).
I have now got around the problem on similar lines to that suggested in the
forum topic I've pasted in above. Essentially, you need to aggregate your
data yourself at postcode sector (district, or area also) level outside of
mappoint and then map that.
I just did it very simply in Excel by creating a new column giving me
postcode sector and creating a pivot table with that as my key field to
aggregate counts and sums by. I brought that into Mappoint, plotted the
results at postcode sector level and went through each sectors onscreen
versus a printout of what the totals should be - and it's correct! - Same
works for access queries & tables.
What a pain though! Let's hope they sort it in 2010.

Steve
