I had problems recently with Word, Powerpoint and Excel crashing after
I had installed the 11.3.3 update. They also would not print even
though other programs could.
I used the remove office program, installed Office 2004, ran the update
download but now Word etc won't launch. They bounce a couple of times
in the doc and then stop.
In frustration I reloaded Office Vx and updated it. I can get Word to
launch but the same printing problems.
I'm on a macbook intel system 10.4.8

Sometimes the Rosetta libraries, responsible for running PowerPC
code on Intel Macs, crash. Thus no PowerPC app launches any more,
but a restart (and hopefully 10.4.9) fixes this.
Besides this effect Office 2004 including the 11.3.3 update should
work fine if installed properly.

How can we diagnose this problem?
How would we know Rosetta has crashed?
Cheers

Do you think the next system update will fix the problem?
Would it help if I (reluctantly) reinstalled everything including
System X?

I think your problems are due to corruptions in the Preference files.
To prove this, I would create a new User ID on the computer and try again.
If things come right, that's what it was. If they don't, delete the new
User.
You could slowly and patiently work your way through all of the things
suggested here. If you follow the sequence on the webpage, chances are one
of these techniques will bring things right for you.

Hope this helps

Another option would be to re-apply the combo updater from Apple. Doing so
overwrites potentially problem-causing files.

Took the plunge and reinstalled the system. chose the option of not
erasing the hard drive but created a Previous System fold.
Restarted and everything is working. Office, Appleworks, Adobe
Professional, Quicken 2003.
Relief. Still don't know what the problem was. Running 10.4.6. Not
sure if I"m game to install the updater to 10.4.8 just in case it was
the problem.
Running Office 11.3 so far so good.
