Hi Scotto,
I'm having the very same problem with the trial version of Office 2008 that I downloaded yesterday. I wanted to try before buying. I've used Office 98 for years on my two older Macs (running OS 9.1 and OS 9.2), but now I need to be able to run Office on my 2 GHz Intel Core Duo iMac running 10.4.11. I'm not finding any help anywhere. I've already tried the reinstall, etc., but still no joy.

I see that you posted this problem last April, and have not received any responses. Did you ever resolve the problem? I don't want to spend the money for something that is not going to work.

It looks like Apple's iWork program will perform the same functions as MS Office, but it is also a lot more expensive, and I am not familiar with using it. I have used MS Office (on a PC) all day long every day at work, as well as Office 98 on my Macs at home for years, so I am very familiar with how to use the programs.

Thank you for sharing anything you may have learned since last April.

Word quits at launch, called support, asked me to trash preference files,to no avail..We then created another user launched Word, still nothing..We also uninstalled Office,re-installed it,launched Word, nothing.I ran Disk Utility, updated any downloads, security updates for the Mac,updated Office and I still can't run Word!! All apps work wonderfully!! PLEASE HELP!!! Spent alot of money not even 6 months ago for this production bundle to just be told it's a Mac issue??? I think not! I'D REALLY APPRECIATE ANYBODY'S INPUT!!

I don't know about Scotto's issue: it's not on the server.

YOUR issue, on the other hand, can be solved.

First, I need to know what you mean by "Re-install"?

Basically you need to run the Office Remover tool first. Which means you
need to disconnect any external drive, then re-boot, while you run that
tool.

The Trial Version will work ONLY from the boot partition, so when you
re-install, that's where it needs to go. (Yeah, it's a bug...)

If it still doesn't work after you have Removed, then re-installed, then we
need to work through the trouble-shooting here:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/TroubleshootingIndex.html

Don't bother to "test" anything, just nuke the files concerned.

Quit at launch is almost always corrupted preferences.

Cheers

Just a couple of points additional to John's reply...

Another possibility is font issues -- You might run the Font Book app
[included with OS X] to verifiy your fonts & resolve duplicates. OS X as
well as Office are quite picky about font integrity.

Moreover, your problem involves the Trial version which may be a bit
different than installing from a source disk. For installation issues it
might be best to use the support channels suggested on the download site
which should also be included in any "readme" files downloaded with the
software. The trial version may have certain idiosyncracies with which we
are not familiar since most of us have had no reason to use it. There should
be no charge for support on installation-related matters.

As a suggestion for future reference, it's never a good idea to submit your
problem as a REPLY to prior posts -- especially one as old as this -- even
if your situation seems similar. It's better to submit a NEW MESSAGE in
order to keep the attention focused on your concerns & avoid confusion.

Hi Bob and John,
I'm trying this again because evey time I hit "publish", my post seems to vanish into nowhere.
I want to thank you both for your input and trying to help me through my predicament. I wrote a very long reply to both of you late last night, but I have no idea where it went when I hit the "publish" button.

I located and ran the Office remover tool. I did not reboot while it was running--it did not allow me to do anything else until it was finished running. Then I emptied the trash (secure empty) and shut it down and went to bed.
I have not tried to do a re-install yet; I don't understand about "running from the boot partition".
Now for Bob's suggestion to "run the Font Book app
[included with OS X] to verifiy your fonts & resolve duplicates". I located it and opened it up. I have no idea what to do next. It just looks like a list of fonts to me.
Thanks for your help,
SpottedDog

I'm not surprised you didn't understand: I wrote that very carelessly.
Sorry about that!

When using Office Remover, you need to reboot twice. Once before running
it, to make sure none of the files it is trying to delete are in use, and
once after running it, to make sure that any files it removed are not still
in memory.

Then when you install Office 2008, you need to ensure that you install it to
the Applications folder on the same drive as the copy of OS X you are using
to run the computer.

In other words: If you have two volumes you can start up from, you need to
ensure that Office lands on the one you are going to use.

At that point, try it: this may be enough to fix the problem.

Hope this helps
