Can I run Word 2004 and Word 2008 for Mac on my iMac?

I've been using Word from Office 2004 for years. I'm not ready to switch to
2008 only.
Can I install 2008 on my iMac as well as 2004?
That way I can gradually creep over to the latest version.

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.1. 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

I would be most grateful for any advice. Thank you.

I have. Works fine.

Do not try to start more than one version of Entourage concurrently.

Make sure Office 2004 is fully up-to-date before you install 2008. Do a
"Rebuild" on your Entourage database to make sure it is clean. And move ALL
of your Office 2004 Word templates to the desktop temporarily.

Then install Office 2008, but DO NOT run Entourage until you have fully
updated Office 2008 AND done a power-off reboot to trigger the system
house-keeping processes that will clear the caches for you.

Quit Entourage 2008.

Then start Entourage 2008 and allow it to up-convert the database. If you
have a large database, this may take 15 minutes (up to an hour).

Once Entourage finishes its conversion, you
're away laughing.

You can put your Office 2004 templates back where they were (Word 2008 will
have created new versions for itself). And you might decide to remove the
shortcut to Entourage 2004 so you do not start it by accident.

That's all there is too it. I regularly have Word 2008 and 2004 and Excel
2004 and 2008 running side by side while I am answering questions. Be aware
that these are large, heavyweight applications: things will get a bit slow
if you leave them all running, so get into the habit of quitting what you're
not using :-)

I learned the hard way that you can't install the 2008 updates if you still have 2004 on your iMac.  See the thread "Office 2008 12.2.1 Update failed."  :-)

Really? I've had absolutely no problem on either of my Macs & have had both
2004 & 2008 installed on all of them since the Beta testing of 2008. All
updates to each version on each Mac have gone without a hitch. Model of Mac
makes absolutely no difference, nor does G5 v. Intel.

Hi Steve:

Really?  I did/can?

It is important that you have only one copy of each visible to Spotlight when the installer runs.  If you have multiple bootable partitions, it pays to disconnect them when running the updates.

But the thing that often blow up updates is if people move or delete part of the software.  If the software modules stored on the boot disk are inconsistent with the ones indicated in the Preferences, bad things will happen: failed updates is one of them.

Thank you so much, John. I don't use Entourage, but I'll follow whatever you
say, including info on other posts about updating, running repair permissions
and cleaning caches.

I'm researching cache cleaners, including OnYx - ONyX - yeah, that one. The
latest I saw said that it was a beta as far as Snow Leopard goes, so I'll
keep perusing the offerings.

I really appreciate your profound expertise, and responses from others.
Yeah, I'm away laughing, even if there is a note of hysteria in it as I
stare up at the cliff-face of what I have yet to learn.

Hi Kei:

Relax :-) It's not that difficult.

OnyX (note the spelling :-)) is the one I used, in OS 10.5. You're right,
it is very version-specific and should not be used in OS 10.6.

But you can use slCC :-)

However, if you remember the power-off and wait two minutes re-boot after
installing Office, you won't need a cache cleaner. The system should do it
automatically.

If you are in Snow Leopard, I would be sure to resolve your font duplicates
before installing either 2004 or 2008.
