how to make independent headers in Word 2011 doc

In working with other versions of Word, I've always thought I had to
create new sections to have headers that were different for each page
in a doc. I can't seem to figure out how to get independent headers
for three pages that are each different sections in my doc. I can't
get the darn "same as previous" to just go away. I've gone into the
page setup settings via the page setup menus and ticked the Different
and Different odd even page boxes, but nothing is working....I don't
recall this being this darn hard in older versions of Word. Any ideas?

I had a similar problem - when you view Headers and Footers (or just
click at the top of a page where you have a header with that "same as
previous" thing), take a look at the Formatting Pallette (which you
can activate under View at least on the Office 2008 on a Mac). You'll
see towards the bottom a section called Headers and Footers. You
should uncheck the item "Link to Previous". At least that worked for
me in a similar situation.

Joe, I appreciate the input, but MS in their infinite wisdom removed
the formatting palate in 2011. I can't even find a command called
"link to previous" when I do a general search for this when trying to
customize a toolbar or menu. If this is still possible, MS has
successfully managed to bury it so deep that I may never find it. This
is why I HATE MS products. I cannot re-learn how to use bloatware like
this every 3-5 years.<End vent> Here's hoping someone has a solution
to this.

Well I finally found it on a MacWorld forum:

One has to type something into the header space they want to adjust.
Once you have done this, choose the Header tab that should now be
sitting between the home and layout tabs. There you will find the link
to previous box and other boxes that really control how the headers
behave. Don't waste your time with any settings under any other menus
as they won't do anything.

And watch out because "link to previous" tends to come back on. One
class I took said to start at the end of the document and disengage
link to previous on each page/section moving towards the beginning of
the document. I agree it's nonsence to have to learn and relearn all
this everytime and have to search out solutions.
