How do I start with page number one on the third page of my novel manuscript?

Hi,

I've been struggling with this for years and this time I've got to get it right. I've combed through the instructions (again) including Bend Word To Your Will to no avail.

My manuscript has the title and my byline on the first page (not page 1.)— the title page—then an epigraph on the second page. I want these two pages devoid of headers and page numbers.

The third page is the start of Chapter One, and that's where I want the header to begin and the numbering to start with 1. :

[Author's Last Name/Title on the left------page number 1. on the right]

I only want numerals with a period. 1., 2., 3. etc.

I want this header to continue to the very end of the book and for Word to automatically insert the page numbers sequentially.

Is this too much to ask? In all humility I've become somewhat of an ace with Word (not the same calibre as so many of you MVPs of course) but getting what seems should be an easy process simply eludes me.

I need help!

Yes, you can. You can also decide whether to have a header or footer
continue from one section to another or start anew. In this case,
one would want to have no header or footer on the first two pages,
then start a new section and put in the desired header and footer.

I've gone through all the instructions on doing this, setting sections. putting in headers, but I end up with the page number and the 'author/title' in the previous two headers. In addition, the page number that's shown up has been a 3 on the third page and that 3 is what appears in the previous two pages, along with Title Page and Epigraph.

It sounds like you haven't done all the steps. You need to uncheck
the default setting of "Link to previous" so that the two sections
have different header/footer definitions. Then delete the header
text in the first section. As for the page numbers, you need to use
the Insert > Page Numbers command and choose "Start at" instead of
"Continue from previous section."

You can get step-by-step instructions for these actions by searching

help pages include information about dealing with page numbering and
headers/footers across different sections of a Word document.
