Open toolbox.
Select Scrapbook copied graphic. Place the graphic in a document by
dragging, double click on the graphic and select place object behind
text. This causes word to crash. When I open the document again I can
then select place behind text save and not crash. BTW I am using a
signature graphic,

Before anyone can even try to help you'll need to indicate your current
version & update levels for both Office & OS X. Without that info it's hard
to guess where to begin.

OK, at least we've determined that your versions are current :-) I can't
reproduce the crash here, however, nor have there recently been any similar
reports in this group, so I'm going on the assumption that the problem is
local to your system. In order to run it down it's important that you follow
the suggestions in the order presented & supply as much detail as possible
about the results you get, especially those that do not work.

1- Quit all programs & use Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions, then shut
down for at least a full minute before starting up. Any improvement?

2- If the crashing continues, launch Word while holding the Shift key. Does
the problem continue? In new documents? Certain documents? All documents?

3- Create a new User Account. Does the same thing occur when logged in as
the different user?

4- Log out then hold Shift while you log in. Does the crashing continue?

When you reply be sure to specify what graphic file format [JPEG, TIFF,
PNG...?] the Scrapbook entry was made from & how you added it to the
Scrapbook. It might also help to know what viewing mode you're working in as
well as whether the document originated on a different computer. If so, what
version of Word created it & what file format is it [DOC, DOCX...?].
