Lost "em" dash

Help. I type in Microsoft Word 2003 and have used the em dash
regularly for years. While tweaking a speedy way to use the dash, Word
elongated the dash and the correct symbol seems to have fallen
completely out of Word.

If I use Auto-format in Auto-correct (which replaces two hyphens with
an em dash), the new em dash thereby created is, again, too long.
Strangely, the same thing suddenly and simultaneously appeared in the
Insert-->Symbol menu. What used to be the standard-length em dash is
now longer.

Any suggestions how to get back the old standard em dash. By the way,
there is no problem with the en dash.

Word 2003 is a Windows version but you've posted to the newsgroup for Mac
Word. There are quite a few circumstances where it doesn't matter, but this
is one which may very well be OS-specific. You'll find links to the Windows
