You'll need a 3rd party utility (or Adobe Acrobat). Word doesn't do the
PDF conversion - it's Mac OSX's PDF engine. There's no setting in Word
that affects that.

I have had the same your problem with Word 2008 until I discovered the real cause of it:

It's definitively Microsoft's BUG, while explanations about image compression and similar stuff that you can find here, posted by the administrators of this forum, are completely BULLSHITS.

The bug is generated when you switch on OpenType ligatures in your document. Try to disable them, and you will obtain far smaller PDFs.
