Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Open a blank sheet.

Enter a value with a dash in it - i.e., U1-1

Excel will NOT allow you to set the series - it'll increment by 1 in the 'normal' direction and decrement by 1 in the 'reverse' direction. It will not allow you to set the series step whatsoever.

Oh the joy. Now I get to enter 256 fields by hand.

Well, what isn't clear is what you would have it do instead or how you're
attempting to get it to do otherwise. If you would explain what you are
trying to do [give explicit examples] perhaps there is a method for getting
it done. For example, if you want the series to go U1-1, U1-5, U1-9, etc.;

Enter U1-1 in one cell,
Enter U1-5 in the next,
Select both cells,
Drag the Fill Handle as far as necessary.

You also have to consider the fact that this is not only a text string
rather than a value, but it is a *custom* text string unique to your
requirements. AFAIK, the entry you're starting with is no more intelligible
as a member of a "series" than any other random text string.

The program is no more psychic than I, so we have no more idea what "series"
you want to "set" it to unless you tell us :-)
