Microsoft Database Daemon

I turned off Office Reminders and deleted Microsoft Database Daemon from my
login items. It remains deleted until I begin to use Entourage. Why? How do
I prevent it from becoming a "login item?"

You need to quit notifications. Then delete it from startup items. Word also
uses the daemon so if anything launches it, it will show up in startup
items. I wouldn't worry about it, it uses nothing unless being called.

Launching Entourage will always restore the daemon to Login Items. It's
part of Entourage and you should not attempt to disable it if you
continue to use Entourage.
Part of the daemon's responsibilities is to provide Reminder notices,
even while Entourage is quit. If you don't want to receive these notices
then select Entourage menu --> Turn Off Office Reminders.

They're called "Office Reminders" in Entourage 2008. And, as I said, I had
turned them off prior to deleting the Microsoft Database Daemon from the
Login Items.

I see no need to have apps opened when they're not being used -- they do
consume resources (I can see them in the Activity Monitor). I already have
quite a few Login Items, and want to "thin out" those that I don't
absolutely need running all the time. That's why I want to delete it from
the Login Items.
And according to the Help page
(http://www.entourage.mvps.org/glossary/daemon.html#dd6), I _should_ be able
to remove the Microsoft Database Daemon from the Login Items:

If you have Office Notifications/Reminders enabled you will see the database
daemon in your startup items.

Yes, if you don't use Notifications and/or Reminders you can delete the

So far, you haven't mentioned what version of Entourage you're using. In
my testing with Entourage Web Services Edition, you can select File -->
Turn Off Office Reminders and then quit Entourage. This will
automatically remove the login item. You must quit. Don't delete it
yourself while Entourage is running.
If you're using Entourage 2004 or earlier then this behavior may have
changed with 2008.

As I've already indicated, I turned off Office Reminders and deleted the
Daemon from my login items. Entourage wasn't running -- in fact, no Office
app was running. However, the Daemon simply reappears subsequently, sometime
after I reopen Entourage.

You seem to be indicating that the daemon may appear although Entourage
is not running. Correct?
Are you running My Day? That too uses the daemon while it is running.

Nope. No Office Reminders, no My Day. Nevertheless, the Daemon reappears in
login items after I reopen Entourage, and remains there after I quit
Entourage.

The daemon uses no CPU unless it's being called by one of the Microsoft
applications. If this really bothers you so much, try testing to see if you
can remove it in a new User.
Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test your problem in
the new User.

CPU usage isn't the issue, Real Memory is.

Another thing to look for is Spotlight indexing. This can be active even
when Entourage is quit. Go to Entourage menu --> Preferences... -->
General Preferences --> Spotlight and UNcheck both options.
If that doesn't work then launch Entourage with the Option key held
down. Disable the bottom option to verify the Database. (I don't
recommend this, but if it's what you're looking for...)

I have been reading this post and I have already done everything in the book to disable the deamon. Apparently there is no way to disable the deamon other than killing the process after you shut down entourage. This will keep the little bugger off until you open entourage again. The indexing also helps you should keep it disabled too.
