This is normal Mac behavior. I canıt quite understand why you want to Send &
Receive when you are composing a letter. Maybe if you explained your logic
we could offer some suggestions. Iım not sure if this would work, you could
probably write a script that you could activate with a shortcut that would
run your schedule Send & Receive.
I know from experience that changing email applications is difficult. I
remember when I was beta testing Outlook Express I couldnıt wait for the
beta to be completed so I could go back to Claris Emailer, however, when I
did I found there where so many new improved features in OE that the
features I liked so much in Emailer were overshadowed.

As for script-writing, well, that's a practice beyond my present
capabilities (though I'm willing to learn)!

Seeing your problem in context does help. Do you not use Schedules to
download your mail?

There are many scripters on this list and on the Entourage talk list that
offer their services free for scripts. First check on Scriptbuilders
<http://scriptbuilders.net/> to see if the script already exists. (I did but
did not see one)
How to subscribe to Entourage talk:

I should have looked, but there is already a shortcut assigned to the Send &
Receive Schedule command-K. Try it!
Iım guessing that you might also enjoy getting audio feedback for specific
messages if you work this way. You run the schedule because you are waiting
on a message from work or a friend. You donıt want to have to leave your
message to check so you use a rule instead that will play a sound when
specific mail is received.
See this page for using custom sounds with Entourage. You can even create
your own sounds or use computer voices to announce your mail. For example,
you could have the AppleScript say ³Mail from Dad².

Youıre welcome! I hope you sent feedback.
The sound scripts sound (no pun intended) like a good idea.

Send All is grayed out, but I can do Send & Receive schedule.
Another option would be to use a third party app like Keyboard Maestro. You
can assign a shortcut to menu items and run them from KM. See this tutorial
on using KM with Entourage:

I rely on them and donšt know what I would do without my special sounds. I
can work along and hear when I get special mail that requires my attention
without wasting time to check.
FWIW, I use special sounds for:
Family, friends, buddies, work, feedback, comments
If you get too many it can get confusing on what sounds do what. :-)
