I have MSN Messenger 4.0, and at home over a wireless
connection, it works, but the other night, I was in
class, and someone had a Linksys wireless router set up.
There were about 10 people connected, and all the people
on PCs could sign in, but on the Mac, it would just sit
there for a long time and eventually time out... anyone
know what I should be looking for to try and fix this?

Sounds like a firewall issue certain port or ports are not open , you might
wanna check your wireless router software

I would suspect a firewall issue, except PC MSN Messenger people could
connect easily. Does the Mac version of MSN Messenger use different ports? I
wouldn't think so....

The mac version doesn't work well behind a firewall.. You can always
use aMSN which does.

Actually, I've tried Fire, and aMsn and neither work.... But the PC people
are happy, so I'm not getting much traction...

Mac OS X itself can sometimes have slight issues with wirless connectivity,
make sure you have the latest Airport software and networking software
downloaded using Software Update. Even though you don't use an Airport
Base-station, you still need the functionality that is provided by the
software on your mac to improve it's wireless connectivit and capabilities.

Might I also suggest that you check your network settings by going to System
Preferences > Sharing and configuring your firewall to allow communication on
ports 6891 - 6900 for File Transfer in MSN Messenger and port 1863 for MSN
Messenger to communicate with the Gateway servers for the .net platform.

If this shouldn't work then my only suggestion to you is to try webmessenger
at http://webmessenger.msn.com
