MSN Mac Messenger group chatrooms?

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

Hi I can't seem to get a group chatroom to work.
I've been told I need to 'nudge' the group or type'/open' to activate the 'activity panel' which opens my chatroom controls but this doesn't seem to be possible on MAC msn?

I've just now found out as well that they can read my messages, but I can't read theirs.
