No one knows. We can only hope that now that Office is shipping, M$
can move some developers on the Messenger Mac's team.

We do know it is development they have even said on the Mactopia Blog, that version 7.0 is in circulation amongst the corporates .

I understand development is slow because they are waiting for the Windows Messenger Live to move to the a new AV protocol/stack. Then they can continue their work on the Mac version.

I do think that MS have let this product slip, but you can understand where is the revenue from this? product? I would expec it hard to make a product that is no going to generate you money, then again I am not sure Messenger for PC makes MS much money? does it?

Hi,

All I've heard is 'later this year' - if it weren't for the fact that most
people outside the US of A uses MSN, I wouldn't touch the damn thing; but
every person I need to chat to uses MSN; its a damn nuisance having to
inform a friend that I can't enjoy all the same features he can.

Mind you, I think what is worse is the lack of integration with the
Expression Media and Mac OS X - and the lack of a complete range of products
for that market on Mac.

I wouldn't mind even if there was an update (say 6.0.5) that had the inclusion of WInks, personalizing your contact list and sending voice clips. At least that would give us something to do.

INCREDIBLE!!!!

Microsoft released the eagerly awaited upgrade and introduced Video Chat for Mac

--HOWEVER--

It only works in a corporate environment with their own server software running!!!!

Ryan, you are forgetting that the technology used for Audio/Video (the A/V stack) used in Messenger 7.0 is incompatible with Windows Live Messenger at the moment. The WLM technology is old and is about to change. As soon as WLM 9 is released with the new A/V stack we will also have Audo/Video n our Macs. There is no point for MS MacBU to implement old technology in the Mac Messenger, and then change millions of lines of code within a few months. That's just counter productive. So, Ryan, do your home work before you post...

On the other hand...
Messenger 7.0 does have a few flaws. In the Swedish version, when you want to change status, there are TWO "Out to lunch" - one of them should be "On the phone".
Offline messages is still missing.

I think it is a pity that 7.0 is just a re-packaged 6.0.3 to us who are not corporate users.

Also, Messenger still does not always show my contact's display pic's. Even if the contact DOES have a display pic - all I see is the green generic icon. Why has this problem not been adressed?

I still have to test file transfers - and I really hope THAT issue has been corrected...

Oh, I found yet another bug...
When a contact logs in you get a shiny nice popup in the lower right corner, light blue and with a little Windows logo... or...? No. Sometimes the popup is plain WHITE! Re-launching the app fixes the problem, temporarily.

Yes, I do. It was the same with 6.0.3
If the contact logs out and then back in the display pic might show. When connecting with WLM8 through VMware/Windows XP I have no problem with the same contacts. Also if I ask the contact to change display pic (even selecting the same pic again) it works. If I log out and then back again the pic sometimes turns generic again. We have three Macs at home, same problem on all three.

Thanks for looking into this! :)

Rebecca, I'm running Office 2008 except for Entourage - I'm still on 2004 there.

I will check if this occurs when an Office app is running or not (and which one).

Hi Rebecca,

First of all - It's Entourage 2004 that causes the problem. When both Entourage and Messenger 7 are running, the user tile goes all white.

Removing the "Microsoft Messenger Data" folder from the MUD worked (but all my settings will be gone, right?).

Then I put the folder back again - and the problem is gone! :)

I'll report back if this bug re-appears!

OK, to clarify things a bit. The user tile in Messenger is typically the
Display Picture. The notifications you see display a little window, which is
what you are referring to from what I understand.

Entourage 2004 has an older Alerts Daemon which will cause the white alerts,
but you should still see the text inside the alert. If you are not seeing
the text, please let me know.

As for the other issue, that is related to the Display Picture (aka User
Tile). Please let me know if this problem is still occurring for you.

Thanks,
Rebecca

there are about 190 contacts on my list - it is possible that they have blocked an account, but i have 2 accounts with the same contact list and i have the same problem, and i doubt all 190 would have blocked both accounts. You haven't installed Messenger correctly. You are not supposed to run
applications from a disk image; instead, download the file again, and when
it opens, drag the application from the currently open window to the
Applications folder on your Mac. You ought to be able to open it then from
within that folder.

Ryan, you are forgetting that the technology used for Audio/Video (the
A/V stack) used in Messenger 7.0 is incompatible with Windows Live Messenger
at the moment. The WLM technology is old and is about to change. As soon
as WLM 9 is released with the new A/V stack we will also have Audo/Video
n our Macs. There is no point for MS MacBU to implement old technology
in the Mac Messenger, and then change millions of lines of code within
a few months. That's just counter productive. So, Ryan, do your home work
before you post...

On the other hand... Messenger 7.0 does have a few flaws. In the Swedish
version, when you want to change status, there are TWO "Out to lunch"
- one of them should be "On the phone". Offline messages is still missing.

I think it is a pity that 7.0 is just a re-packaged 6.0.3 to us who are
not corporate users.

We do know it is development they have even said on the Mactopia Blog,
that version 7.0 is in circulation amongst the corporates .

I understand development is slow because they are waiting for the Windows
Messenger Live to move to the a new AV protocol/stack. Then they can continue
their work on the Mac version.

I do think that MS have let this product slip, but you can understand
where is the revenue from this? product? I would expec it hard to make
a product that is no going to generate you money, then again I am not
sure Messenger for PC makes MS much money? does it?

No one knows. We can only hope that now that Office is shipping, M$ can
move some developers on the Messenger Mac's team.

Messenger for Mac version 7 has already been released. It can be downloaded
for free on Mactopia, but it does not offer audio/video chat for home users.
To participate in A/V chats, you will need to use Messenger in a corporate
environment using Office Communications Server 2007.

The reason for leaving out A/V support in this version is the fact that the
current A/V protocols used by Live Messenger are going to be replaced by
newer ones at some point in the future. The Messenger for Mac team decided
not to write thousands, perhaps millions, of lines of code to support an old
standard only to see it replaced half a year afterwards. In other words,
once the Live Messenger team makes the switch to the new protocols, you
should have a compatible Messenger for Mac version very quickly.

Hi, I have been trying to sign in using MSN Messenger for Mac 7.0 version but always failed. The errors says: "Sign in to Ms Messenger failed because the service is not available or you may not be connected to the internet."
But when I sign in my hotmail using Adium (another software for mac similar like meebo), it just works! So please help! Thanks.

I have recently installed Office 08. It comes with Messenger 6.0.3. I see that 7.0.1 is available. Why...when my autoupdate checks for new updates, does messenger 7 not show as an available update download?

While Messenger comes bundled with Office 2008 it's technically not considered
part of the suite. The Microsoft AutoUpdate application will only update
Office applications.

Hope this helps!

Hi!

You can find Mac Messenger 7.0.1 at the following address:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/messenger/default.mspx

Once you've downloaded the application, just double-click the .dmg file to
mount it on your desktop. Drag the "Microsoft Messenger" application from
there to your computer, and you're done!

Hi All, after so many mails to be in contact with the Technical Support of Windows Live Messenger, they told me about this page to find "help" about my situation.

I'm using Msn Messenger 7,01. From one week ago, my msn started doing "different things".
When I am adding a new contact, after the "next" button.. it says: "no se puede agregar al contacto porque no dispone de las credenciales (usuario y contraseña) en Live Windows Messenger" (in spanish, cause i use it in spanish). so, if i click "back" and i select the option to add the contact to the address in my.... and then unselect it and i click "next" now it adds me the contact! WHY?!
The problem is not all of it... then the contacts (new from last week), NEVER see me online, even i'm on line. Of course, they cannot see my picture profile and i can only chat when i see them online and i open the dialog text window... if not, i'm invisible and withour pic to show in my profile. Other msn contacts already see my picture and they see me online (contacts added before one week ago).
If I go to privacy, and I mark "notify me when i get message from people is not in my contact list" each time the new contacts send me a chat window, it notify me about it... why?! They are already in my contact list, even in a group i have added them!.... if i unchecked this option it does not keep saying me that, but they still dont see me online.
If i mark the option "notify me when someone adds me his/her contact list of friends" each time i connect, there comes ALL the windows asking me to add one by one, of all contacts (contacts added by me, one week ago).... ok, i do it, but if i got disconnect and then i connect again... again the same nightmare... until i disable this option.
If i choose the option to be seen by people only in my contact list... all these new "contacts" are BLOCKED! how?! is it possible? and i want to unblock them and it's not possible...
What's going on with this messenger? It used to work OK and now it's a BIG nightmare for me and my new contacts (old contacts are OK, but new are a nightmare).
And... when i used to click in Mail, it used to open a window in firefox and it did not ask me for password (i have unabled the option about asking por password each time i open mail or any application that uses the same password)..... now... it asks me for the password each time i want to check my mail directly from messenger... what's going on? Is it my msn or my account or what?
I have deleted this messenger, downloaded again, and re-install it. Same problem.
I have deleted 7,01 and downloaded 6,03... same problem
I have deleted it and download 7,0.... same problem...
I'm desesperated, now, msn works like a stupid program that does not let me be in communication with my "new contacts"... i'm invisible for them, or i "block" them even i don't want, or they are "strangers" sending me messages, even in my contact list... or they cannot see my profile picture.... what is it all about?
Can you help me to know , what's going on? What should I do?
Please.... it's urgent.

Thanks!
