You cannot install Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume.
What does that mean because I know I have an older version of the messenger and I would like to know if I have to uninstall the older version or what and how I do it please help help S.O.S...
Isn't this automatically update because I don't receive any updates notices and I check in my system of how I have the updates and I have them as automatically.... so what is going on :(

Everytime I try to log-in I keep getting this window saying: "A newer
version of MSN Messenger for Mac is available. You must download the newer
version in order to continue using MSN Messenger. Would you like to do
this now?".
Everytime I try to log-in I keep getting this window saying: "A newer
version of MSN Messenger for Mac is available. You must download the newer

I click yes to downlaod now.
Hi!
I'm sorry to hear the automatic update isn't working for you. As an
alternative, you can manually download Mac Messenger 7.0.1 from the official
site here:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/messenger/default.mspx
The download instructions from that site follow:
To install this update
1. Print this page if you want to use it as a reference when you are
offline.
2. Quit any applications that are running, including all Office
applications, Microsoft Messenger, and Office Notifications, because they
might interfere with installation.
3. Make sure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements.
4. Click Download, or click the link for the language version that you
want.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen to save the file to your hard
disk. If you are using Safari, the downloaded file is saved to the desktop
unless you specified a different location in the Preferences dialog box of
Safari. To check your preferences, on the Safari menu, click Preferences,
and then click General.
6. If the file you downloaded does not expand automatically, on your hard
disk, double-click the file that you downloaded in step 5.
7. Drag the Microsoft Messenger icon to the Applications folder on your
hard disk.
8. After the application has been copied to your hard disk, you can drag
the Microsoft Messenger volume to the Trash, and then drag the file that you
downloaded to the Trash.
9. Double-click the Microsoft Messenger application that you copied to
your hard disk to start the setup program, and then follow the instructions
on the screen.
Let me know if this works for you :)

everytime I try to open msn messanger , even when i download it it doesn't
want to open anything, even when i download it, also how do i get the
messanger on the desktop icon?
Hi!
Can you be more specific about what's happening when you attempt to open Mac
Messenger? Do you see any dialogs at all? Did you drag the "Mac Messenger"
icon from the .dmg image to your local hard drive?
I am using OS X 10.4.11 on a G4 ppc PowerBook and have downloaded and installed Messenger:Mac 7...
However, when I try to run the app it attempts to log me in, before hanging after about a minute and then presenting the following message:
"Sign in to Microsoft Messenger failed because the service is not responding. The service is not available or you may not be connected to the internet"
I can assure you I am connected to the internet as i am writing this message and before installing this update i had no issues connecting to msn, I installed it on an intel mac with no issue and have even tried regressing to an earlier version on my mac and now experience the same problem.
A friend with a ppc iMac is experiencing the same problem, is there a service issue or is there an issue with msn?

Dave
Hi Dave,
If you're upgrading from 6.0.3, it may be that Messenger 7.0.1 is having
trouble with your existing preferences. If this is the problem, deleting
your preferences would probably help.
Note: Deleting your preferences will clear your conversation history!
To do this, delete the following:
- The "Microsoft User Data" folder in ~/Documents
- The "com.microsoft.messenger.plist" file in ~/Library/Preferences
In both these cases, the tilde (~) refers to the user directory on your
system drive.
Let me know if this works for you :)

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately this has not solved the problem and I am still getting the same error as outlined in my first post.
I backed up my conversation history to my desktop with different folder names so as not to lose them, this shouldn't have affected anything should it?
I'm connected to the internet via a wireless router, though no port settings etc have been changed on this device so this should not affect it, just out of interest and to check every avenue, do you know the ports which need to be open for Messenger:mac to work?

Dave
Hi Dave,
You shouldn't need to open any ports. Is your router a Netgear router by any
chance? If so, some users have reported that downgrading your firmware might
solve this problem.
Backing up your conversation history shouldn't have any effect on sign-in :)
My router is a Belkin 54g unit, since having this issue i have tried nearly every version of msn with no joy...
Bit of an odd one eh!!!

Dave
MSN won't sign me in
Adium won't sign me in
Mercury will sign me in
ebuddy.com will sign me in

It's actually just "microsoft-messenger.for-mac.com" wthout the www.
-Bryan
If you have a problem installing messenger, the solution is simple. You
have to go to www.microsoft-messenger.for-mac.com, scroll to the bottom
and click on download "messenger for mac 7" or "messenger for mac 6.0.2"
Or you can go to the msn homepage and search "messenger for mac" and it
will let you find this page. Then follow the installation instructions.
If you just download the messenger (messenger.bim) on the regular I'M
page, it will NOT work. You have to find the messenger for mac to download.
Hope this helps.
You know what some of us Mac users are like about Microsoft - how about convincing me? ;)
Success!!!!!
I was trying to download 3.5.1 - because it said it was for Mac OS X.
Now I've downloaded the correct version (7) all is well.
Sorry Bill - but please make it clearer which version is for exactly which OS.
Hi!
What version of Messenger are you having this issue with? You can find this
out by going to the Messenger menu > About Messenger...

Hi Sergio,
You can try manually updating to 7.0.1. You can find the download here:

Please let me know if that fixes your problem :)
What gives?
> How do i use a vebcam on my messenger for mac?
Currently, audio video is supported only in Messenger 7.0 for Mac *and*
it only works in corporations that are using Microsoft Office
Communications Server 2007.
A/V is not available to the general public yet. It will be available
once Microsoft has upgraded its Live infrastructure. I do not have an
ETA for this to happen.
Hope this helps!
