Internet Mail and Internet News don't like to start minimized. Right-click
on your shortcut and check the properties, and make sure you have it
configured to run "maximized."

Jeff,
this may also be a problem with the Windows 95 SHELL or Windows Explorer
which your specific computer manufacture has designated to run on your
system.
For me, a Compaq owner Internet Mail wouldn't run at all. It acted just as
you described. For a split second it would appear on the Task Bar then
disappear.
I learned that Compaq has you running their own SHELL "CPQShell.exe" as
well as their own "Explorer.exe" MSIMail wouldnt work with these on my
machine, but the fix was rather simple if your experienced with the Windows
Explorer File Manager and a little bit of DOS knowledge helps too.
You can find out if this may be your problem by looking in your Windows
folder. Locate Explorer.exe, if the file is less than 200KB in size, it's
possibly a phony. The real MicroSoft Explorer is around 200kb, in the
Compaq issue, they put a 29kb explorer.exe in there, and renamed the real
explorer something like
"Microsoft Explorer.exe" the DOS name will be something like MICROS~1.EXE
If this is your situation, you can simply rename these files. NOTE You
will have to do the renaming in DOS Mode for this to take affect.
I renamed the phony Compaq - Explorer.exe to CPQEXPLR.EXE
While in DOS Mode, and in the "C:\Windows" folder, you can rename this file
by typing the following:
ren Explorer.exe oldexplr.exe (or name it according to whatever you
will recognize)
and renamed the real MS Explorer - MICROS~1.EXE to Explorer.exe
ren MICROS~1.EXE Explorer.exe
then reboot.
Remember, Im running a Compaq 4704, this may not work for you but it would
be worth checking into. It's quite possible that Compaq's not the only one
doing this.
Dave
Check the shortcut to IM and make sure it's configured to run maximized. IM
and IN don't like to start minimized, so they'll immediately close if
they're configured that way.
