Hello,

I am using Windows XP with IIS 6 and cannot start SMTP.
The error and syptoms I have are exactly as per the KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/840761 ,

"
the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) virtual server does not start
successfully when you try to start it.
The service has returned a service-specific error code.
Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.
When you try to find the Error event in Event Viewer, no Error event is
logged that is related to this problem. You expect to find an Error event in
the event log that indicates why the virtual server did not start.
"

I'm using Win XP, not Windows Server 2003. The hotfix in the article
therefore does not install, beacuse the platform is not supported for the
hotfix.

Any suggestions please?

Uninstall the IIS SMTP service, delete the metabase (if you do not have
web sites also defined there), and reinstall.

How is "checking your SMTP service" an actionable recommendation?

Did you read the original post?
