Good God, what's that doing here? It is also widely known as the FrontPage 98
Crack, a registry cleaner, and a half dozen other things. Joy.

That's the easiest way to avoid *SO* many so-called "security risks" on the
net. In fact, I've named my windows directory something so random that I'd be
impressed if any wannabe cracker wrote a trojan horse for it...

Ryan,

I hate to burst your bubble but I could easily find out your Windows
directory. I would just make a call to the Windows API function
GetWindowsDirectory(). Quoting from the Windows API help file "The
GetWindowsDirectory function retrieves the path of the Windows directory."

Very true, but you aren't going to do it from a batch file. ;-) Besides, I
never run ANY code that isn't obtained from a "reasonably" trusted source.
Forget download.com and the shareware "archives"; I obtain my software from
the company's own web site. Granted, that could still be corrupt, but the
likelihood of a company distributing virus infested and/or trojan horse
archives is rather low.

I guess that anyone crooked enough to want to crack passwords and dumb
enough to open a bat file attached to a post from an unknown source deserves
whatever they get.

No, not exactly. It's a trojan. IT's a program that looks like it's
something good, while in this case, it wipes out your key system files.

Whoops there. That's quite a violation of MS's EULA...

Actually, most don't "end" in anything...

Beware everybody - do not run the attached file of the message to which this message is a reply.

There are several messages of this style posted to these newsgroups and no matter what the subject line may say and the file
purports to contain they all do the same thing - the file deletes your main system files.

Avoid these posts at all costs.

The bottom line is to only run attached files if you can verify their source or check their contents first.

You DO know its ILLEGAL (as in a federal offense) to install office 97 on
more then one computer dont you? You must have because if i remember
correctly you agreed to the Microsoft EULA specifically prohibiting
unauthorized distribution upon installing office.

Whats even more ironic is that this IS a microsoft message board... boy wont
ur dad be suprized when the feds show up!!!

The violation is this: if he sold the CD to someone else, then he should
have uninstalled it from his machine. The friend can (and probably did)
install it on his machine, meaning there are now 2 machines running the same
copy of Office. And that is illegal.

The next time you are in the store with your dad, pick up something of
interest to you and ask your dad if you can steal it. When he says no,
then ask why it's OK for him to steal from software companies just
because it's easier to get away with. I can't believe so many people
do this stuff and then react in shock when their kids do something
unethical and immoral!

You sound like a good kid, but really if you sell something you don't
own it anymore and shouldn't use it. It's always more hassle than it's
worth, like you'll find out if your copy gets toasted somehow, and you
get to have a clear conscience if you don't steal.

I'll bet he appreciates the fact that you have exposed him as a software
pirate here on an International Usenet group. Your father didn't raise any
smart kids did he?

You may be yet if the software police arrive at his door.

Not even remotely true, and this is NOT a virus.

The correct term for this type of program is "Trojan Horse" - since it
is offering one thing, but turns out being destructive. And Trojans and
virii can end with any extension. Most of the password sniffing
programs sent to members on AOL are either .zip files containing
setup.exe and all of the files needed to capture your password and mail
it to another account, or are sent as self-extracting programs ending
with .exe which does the same thing.

It is the Trojan Horse programs that finally lead AOL (in its typical
reactionary style) to put warnings on files attached to email before
being downloaded. Too little, too late - since quite possibly a quarter
of its membership has probably download such wonderful promised programs
as "OH Generator" and "Guide Tools" sent out by the wannabee-hackerz
giving them what amounts to unlimited access to AOL at others expense.

Carlos, it's your blatant use of profanity in a *public* newsgroup which
has everyone so "obsessed." Please read this excerpt from the rules of
conduct:

RULES OF CONDUCT

Appropriate Language: The purpose of the newsgroups is to exchange technical
information and expertise on Microsoft products. Please avoid personal
attacks, slurs, and excessive profanity in your messages.

You would think all that it takes is a little common sense. The guy comes
on here "shouting" in his 100 point font (okay, it wasn't quite that large)
with compound profanity in his signature, and he didn't "get" why we were
all upset?

Lighten up the Lotta ye!
Fudging Bas.....!

His dad bought a copy of MS Office and sold it. Big Deal! So he
shouldn't.

I think his crime is in actually PAYING for it the first Place.

Anyway it usually 'innocent' people you think nothing about copyright
and licenses etc. dammit the guy bought the software, He Paid for it
[I think but this is not actually established is it?] and most people
would think nothing about selling on a product they bought. Maybe a
little more public awareness is needed but this guy committed not
crime that would go to court. Maybe! Just maybe, Mr. MS himself, Mr.
Bill would ask fro a share of the proceeds.

Warez forever free!!! Now piss off and let the boy alone!

It also depends on where you grew up, and with what language. Where we
might say "damn" (or "darn" in my hometown), the Dutch and the Germans say
"shit" with nary a raised eyebrow in sight. Many Europeans that I know have
learned English from watching American television and movies. To them,
"fuck" is just another word, quite useful to use, and without the taboo that
many Americans associate with it. And if you had ever lived in New York
city, you'd know that "fuck" is just another word, and a quite expressive
one at that. It's part of the New York alphabet: fuckin'a, fuckin'b,
fuckin'c, etc.

I suspect Carlos' mother tongue is something other than English, since PRTC
stands for Puerto Rican Telephone Company. It is quite possible that the
words you find so inappropriate do not affect him the same way. And the
main reason so many English speakers find them offensive has to do with
historical events involving the Norman invasion and the attempts of the
conquerors to suppress Anglo-Saxon in favor of French.

If we're going to have a global community here, we have to loosen up some of
our own culturally-imposed taboos.

You've gotten LOTS of business-knowledge from that lemonade-stand
experience, haven't you?... duncy-donkey...
Unlike your lemonade-empire, they've got development-costs to recover,
thousands of paychecks to deliver, taxes, electricity/water/sewer type
costs, etc...
Like if everyone in your town pirated cable-tv.. There is no direct cost
(using your simple 'model') caused by 'pulling' the signal out of that great
big wire, but they'd, for whatever unknown reason, go out of business...

I have never seen prices drop when a major software pirate is captured.
Simple economics. If the public is willing to pay $xx for it now, they'll
be willing tomorrow, so let's keep the price as it is, and use the "savings"
for a nice executive perk.

More simple economics: those who pirate software obviously would not *buy*
the software. Most of those who buy (or otherwise procure) pirated software
obviously would not buy the commercial product. That means that all those
figures of "lost income" by the software companies is just nonsense. You
can't lose something you never had and never would have had.

Please note that I do not condone pirating. Good Heavens, I even PAY for
shareware!

Wait a minute. I just re-read this after responding in some other group.
You logic fails at Step1: If more people bought software instead of pirating
software the market would be bigger

That is a very big hypothetical IF, and I doubt you can provide any evidence
that more people WOULD buy software if a pirated version were not available.
Without those "more people" buying software, your entire argument flounders.

Consider this true scenario: a friend gave me a 6 set CD-ROM that contained
about 50-60 pirated games, utilities, and some serious applications (Corel
Draw 7 was one of them). This friend knows very little about computers, and
just thought this would make a nice gift for a computer geek like myself.
He didn't know these were pirated. I did, and haven't installed any of them
for more than 1 day, just out of curiosity. Now that friend was not about
to walk into a store and spend hundreds and hundreds of guilders on
commercial software. He paid about 50 guilders for the 6-CD set. (By
comparison, a new game costs at least 99 guilders, which is a bit steep for
a gift). Now tell me please, which software manufacturer lost any money at
all in this scenario? In fact, did anyone at all lose money? No. The
pirate made 50 guilders, the friend did not lose any money (it's the thought
that counts, whether I use any of the gift or not), and I didn't lose any
money. But you can be sure that the accountants are counting that 50
guilders as "lost income".

Sorry, I didn't really mean to get into this, but now I have<g>.
I'm going back to the Help Desk now.

Dave,
Sorry to burst your bubble, but it isn't the software pirates that cause
your software to be so high since the company really doesn't have a way to
monitor software that is on the internet. I download a full version of a
product that has a thirty day trial timer on it. After that thirty days the
product (software) doesn't function anymore. Pirated software comes in at
the point someone decompiles said trial version to learn of the timer code
password or Reg. #. MS or whatever company never knows about or feels the
impact of this software not being legally purchased since its normally those
who can't afford said software that go for the pirated copies that come from
Warez Groups across the internet. And as for your comment about simple

economics, bull!!!!!! The only way a company can be economically hurt is if
that company has a material value envested such as a CD or packaging and
manuals that must be printed. The only way that this can be accomplished is
if it is stolen right off the shelves from an independent or software
vendor. How do I know this, 15 years writing and selling software.

Simple economics:

It doesn't matter whether the company in question knows about the piracy or
not. The simple fact of the matter is that lost revenue (no matter how
small or how large, whether or not the company knows about it, regardless of
whether the company has an accurate figure for it) translates into lost
income. If I am a software developer and I see that MS is only making X
amount of revenue off of MS Office and it would take me Y to produce a
competitive version and Y is not that much smaller than X, then I will not
endeavor to produce my competitive version. Why you ask? Because I would
have to capture a larger share of the market to make a profit, which would
probably not be feasable.

However, if the market is large due to non-piracy or any other factor, this
might make X a lot bigger than Y and thus make my competitive version more
likely to turn a profit. Given the better odds of my product turning a
profit I might go into competition with MS which would end up lowering the
prices of the product.

This is all simple economics. But if you guys want to make excuses, which
are based on false analogies and white elephants, then I can not make any
argument, because you will believe whatever it is you want to believe. The
facts remain the same.

Sincerely,
Dave

MAN! I have been amazed at this thread......software makers are at risk
just as ANY company that makes a product that can be copied, or is easily
transferred . How many of you so called law abiding citizens ever copied a
music cd onto a tape ot whatever? isn't that lost revenue for the comany
too? they make cassette tapes as well as cds. I don't reccomend "spftware
piracy" or cheating or whatever but If I have 2 computers and I buy a piece
of software and I damn well better be able to put it on both if I want to.
If this takes a few dollars out of Gate's pocket I won't lose any sleep over
it. It just don't make any sense for a SOHO user to have to buy several
copies of the same program. Do you buy 2 music cd's so you can play 1 in
home and 1 in car? whats the diff?
