Well, these colors are still not perfect, but I wanted to show you that I'm
now scanning some of my own art masterpieces!!! Wonder what THIS is!!

And maybe green ink would be better?

I've liked both of the Jane. What is the original medium?

Thanks for sharing your work with us....

Art paper collage, 5X7. But now i am working with acrylics and
water-soluble pastels in larger formats. Also love to find and paint my own
frames and do my own matting. And now this NG has made me fall in love
with computer art, too!

Thanks, Curmudgeon Bill, for the encouragement! It's extremely gratifying
to hear you say that!!

You're most welcome Jane... I was wondering because I really like bright
saturated colors and both of yours seemed a little "washed out" to me. I
was trying to figure out if it was because the originals were not very
saturated [like say construction paper] or because of the scanning process.

I have to respect and admire anyone with the talent to express themselves
artistically...

Hi, Curmudgeon--

I think it's because I have never scanned before and didn't fiddle around
with the controls. Art paper is sort of glorified construction paper but
smoother, with less tooth, and more light-resistant. The colors have held
up really well for four or five years, so it must be my lack of
scanning/computer know-how! Also, i had trouble managibg those 3MB and 4 MB
scanned files and never really got a clear understanding of how I finally
lucked into reducing the file size. They are jpg images, although someone
told me that gif images hold up better under the resizing trauma.

Moi? I'm still basically clueless--- but learning every day. And my motto
has always been, "Why should I let a lack of talent come between me and my
love of art?"

LOL

Thank you, Bill, for this great information! I still don't know how to do a
screen shot, but I am learning more about scanning through simple trial and
error. I'll be visiting that scanning website soon! Thanks for the URL!
Turns out that my scanner can reduce the image when I export the image to my
clip art art file, and the size reduction is dramatic! What a relief!!
The jpeg seems to look better than the gif. So I'm bumbling along...LOL
Thank you very much for the help and the encouragement. And especially
thank you for the color enhancement you did on the little clip I sent!! It
really knocked my socks off and gave me some good ideas!! Keep looking in
this space for an upcoming scan of a photo of a bunch of my abstract art.
The art itself is too big to scan, though! Maybe I could scan good photos
of each picture to send to galleries to get them interested?

Jane, if you have a paint program a screen shot is very simple to do:

1. start your paint program and minimize it.
2. Open the program, image or whatever you want to take a screen shot of.
3. Either hit the print screen key if you want the whole screen or Alt+print
screen if you just want the "Active" window.
4. Restore your paint program.
5. Look in your paint program's File. Edit or Edit-->Paste menu for an
item something like "new from clipboard" if you find it, just select it and
your screen shot should be loaded into your paint program.
6. If you can't find a "new from clip board" menu entry, just open a new
blank image in your paint program. Make it the size of your screen, i.e.,
800 x 600 if that's your screen resolution. Click on Edit --> Paste or try
Control+V and paste the screen shot into the blank image.
7. Crop, edit and save....That's it.

Jane the general rule is:

1. If the image is full color, like a photograph use JPG. It was
specifically designed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group [JPEG] to
compress continuous tone, full color images.

2. If the image is less than full color, especially if it is line art, flat
color like many web graphics are, like a comic book, use GIF.

The other thing to remember is that JPEG is a lossy compression method, that
is, it get smaller files by "throwing away" information about the image. If
you throw away enough information, you have no image or at least a crappy
looking one, that's what you're deciding when you decide the compression
setting when saving a JPG, how much information to "throw away."

GIF files on the other hand use a "lossless" compression method, that is,
GIFs achieve smaller file size by specially coding the image information and
storing it more efficiently. Nothing is "thrown away." GIFs trade
processor time for disk space. When a GIF is "decoded" every bit of image
information is restored. Unfortunately GIFs only handle 256 colors.

A new file type that you may be able to use is the PNG file. It has some of
the advantages of both JPGs [will store 24bit color] and GIFs [it can be
lossless] but is not widely supported yet. Luckily PNGs can be used in IE
and OE.

If your images are too large you are probably scanning at too great a resolution. Unless you have a very small picture that you are trying to enlarge you seldom need to scan at more than 75-100 dpi.  For some very good info on scanning go to http://www.scantips.com/

Thank you, Curmudgeon Bill, Cajun King! I appreciate these clear
instructions, and they will be put to use in the very-near future!! Loved
your belt buckle slide show! And does your sister-in-law also belong to the
NG? Looks like the whole family loves those silver horse belt buckles!

Again, thank you so much for the help!
