As our business model we need to track shipments by Container Number. Each PO
is delivered from overseas in several Containers arriving on different dates.
How can we track the containers number? we need to know :
1-how many containers in the way?
2- what is in each container?
3-Received Container?
4-Do the receiving for each container seperately according to the packing
list for it.
Thank You

You could use lot numbers, and if you are already using lot numbers, you
could use one of the three lot attributes to store a container number. I
recall that the field is only 10 Chars wide whereas container numbers are 11
chars long. As I recall, you could drop the last number because it is
actually a check digit (and can be computed)

This is probably the best option because the container number stays with the
lot.
IF you are unable to use lot tracking -(already using serial numbers?) then
you may have to employ work-arounds or customize to suit.

Receive into a transit warehouse, then transfer to an operational warehouse
when the goods arrive.

Are you ready for version 10?

You could receive your goods overseas when the items are shipped into a
vendor site. Then perform an In-Transit transfer from that site to your
local site. Each Transfer allows multiple items in the transaction and
tracks shipping information, including a 20 character Tracking Reference --
Container Numers anyone?

This, of course assumes FOB shipping. You would have a received not
invoiced fo the goods having performed the PO receiving at the shipping point
but the invoice does not start ageing until vouchered.

And, when the container arrives, you perform a receiving transaction much
like the PO receiving from exactly the same screen!

See our Version 10 Unleashed book for details on this process.

Until you are ready for Version 10, you might receive the goods to the
Vendor Site, do a transfer to an In-Transit site, and then when the container
arrives do a transfer to your working site. The Container number can be
entered in the Transaction Record Notes or an Extender Window can be created
for this.

Several variations of this also come to mind.

Thank you for the solution. but these does not solve our problem completely.
We use Lot numbers to track the items for each container. but it is not
possible to receive container wise or check the status of a container. I
think we may need a third party component that can do these jobs. Do you know
any good third party component?

What version of GP are you on? And what kind of status checking do you need
to perform?

Hi Hesam,

We can write a 3rd Party component as per your custom business requirements.
Also we can extend this solution to work with handhelds. If you are

We are using another customized ERP. We are going to purchase GP 10 so we are
evaluating.
For the containers we have to track all the shipments (In/Out) completely.
How many containers in way?

what is in each container?
containers by vendor?
containers by customer?

One of the latest innovations in today's shipping is a satellite tracking device for containers and goods tracking. It knows exactly where each package is located or merchandise we sent overseas. Smart GPS device allows track any location in the world and know exactly where our equipment is located. containers tracking http://www.starcomsystems.com/products/triton – the next generation
