I'm new to front page; using 2003 I have several books but none have been of
any help.
I found the program easy enough to work with while designing a simple
vacation photo
gallery. But when I try to use FP to upload to my host I get nothing most of
the time.
FP says it is happily uploading but on different attempts, using the same
file set I have
had time to completion estimates from 45min the usual to a staggering 37
hours. They
all finish with no errors except for a few that time out. However, when
done there is
nothing on the server; at least nothing that can be seen by a browser. I do
have the
FP extensions enabled for the root directory of the site. I can't find
anything in my books
about FP file structure. Can someone explain the purpose of the _private
directory as
this directory is the only one that uploads regularly it and it's child
directories.

What is your site url?

What is the path you use to publish?

Do you have FrontPage or Sharepoint Services selected on the remote web site
tab?
Do you have Changed pages only selected on the publishing tab?
Don't have anything ticked in the optimize tab.

Thanks Tina
For the quick reply.
1. URL http://the-picture-palace.com
2. The URL is located in the /picture.palace.root directory
3. Have not checked this when I said FP extensions enabled I meant I had my
hosting company enable FP extensions. I will check this tonight.
4. I have changed these options several times in the setup dialog. I will
select changed pages only next try.
5. I have totally avoided the optimization tab!

I will check out the links that you provided and I do have two books but they
are both for beginners and do not provide any file system information.
Is the (_private) file system FP default name for /root?
Can the (_private) file system be renamed?
The child directories _vti_cnf appear in each directory but in the main
directory it contains an application "fpinternetgate" in all sub directories
it appears to contain a map of the folder contents. What are these files?

Thanks again Tina
Gary

Right click the image place holders on the web page that shows at the link you provided and select "Properties."

There are some issues with the file names and paths to the images.
Some have % in the file names which will break links.
Trying to open the image in a browser using the links shown below produces a page not found error which tells me for
some reason that the files are not on the server.

Thank you Steve
For the quick reply My Fault for the misunderstanding.
What you are looking at are some files I sent to the server using an FTP
program
not FP. Over many hours and many attempts to upload with FP nothing gets
to the
server but "_private" sometimes vti_cnf occasionally image folder (no
images) none
of the html ever uploads so there is nothing from front page at that URL at
least
nothing you can see with a browser.
Sorry for the mistake I should have taken those down when I finished playing.
The page is functional from my disk I just can't get it to upload with FP. I
was
trying to see if I could up load it piece meal to the server using FTP and
make it
work but I'm not sure how to put the files together. I'm pretty sure it's
just some
simple setting I'm not aware of.
Any help greatly appreciated
Vacation time is near
Thanks again Gary

Doesn't look like there are FP extensions installed there, and if they were
they'd be wacked by using FTP anyway.

You can't ftp when your using fpse.

Get your host to reinstall them

don't use ftp.

The path (unless your host is totally weird) needs to be your domain name.

http://the-picture-palace.com

I don't know why you would have it in /picture.palace.root directory
on the server (or are you talking about your hard drive?)

The private folder is just that private .. for files you want to keep to
yourself.

the vti files are needed for the fpse.

the other file I don't know about.

I can see a site there I thought you couldn't publish?
