I use Expressions 1 for designing and publishing web sites. I recently had to switch to a site that uses FTP to transfer files. Expressions is so slow that it takes hours to update a web site. I've changed the proxy settings to active and passive but doesn't seem to make a difference. I read somewhere that Expressions 3 has solved the problems I have and wonder if that is accurate or is there a way to solve this problem without an upgrade?

EW3 has its own, new and much improved FTP.

Of course, you also have the option of using any external FTP program of
your choice instead of EW1's FTP, if it's slow for you.

I'm having issues with the SFTP support EW3 -- the Publish wants to resend
*all* the pages up to the server, not just the changed pages.

How do I configure SFTP to only publish changed files? EW3 knows which have
changed because it marks all the changed files with the blue arrows in the
Publish pane.

EW3 will upload what you see, or what you select. In the Publish panes,
Change the view dropdown to Changed Files, and only those will be published.
if the View is set to Folders, then everything will be published. If you
select any files, then only those selected will be published.

Thanks! Now it seems obvious. ;-)

Rather it makes sense than being obvious .. i still maintain a button
marked publish is what is needed...

to me the publishing options are all over the place .. a bit here a bit
there..... the underlying tech might be better but the interfacing lets it
down ... and that should be the simplest thing ...

The problem with having "changed" selected is, if you have sub-sites and
nothing changed on the root, there is no publishing button available. Yes,
you can independantly publish the sub-sites, but what a step backward from
FP...

I might be a bit thick headed here.. but with expression web ... what is the
need for subwebs? I just use folders if I want a 'sub' ... even if one used
a sub domain you could still use a folder .... with fp of course you needed
to separate out the themes and shared borders but of course there is no need
for that in ew ... so what else use are subwebs? I've not used them since i
stopped using themes and shared borders after fp98.

on the publishing in ew3 ... I guess i need to focus on it because its
defeating me at the moment .. I had to close and go to ew2 so it would
publish correctly and FASTER ...I shall have to write a tutorial cos its the
only way I'm going to get to grips with it ...

There's really no need for them but I've had some for many years and I'm not
going to change my website structure now...

It wouldn't be such an issue if Expression would open in multiple windows
rather than closing one just to open another.

Expression Web 2 and earlier works the same way as FrontPage 2003 - each web
or subsite is opened in a new instance.
Expression Web 3 will open a subsite in a new instance if it is opened from
its parent web by double clicking the folder in the folder list or folder
view.
Expression web 3 will also open webs and/or subsites in a new instance if
you use Site->Manage Sites List and double click a site in that list.

Using other options from the menus (recent sites, open site, etc) will, as
you say, close the current site then open the new.

Steve

did you mean to use another word other than structure? ... you do know that
your structure will not change? its just a matter of hitting the subweb icon
and clicking change to folder...

though perhaps you have different dwts on the subwebs and that's what you
meant by structure?

though actually I can think of one use ... if its a fairly large site and
you hit publish and changes on those folders publish it will take longer to
publish ... I

do you mean instances of expression web? .... I can open multiple instances
of expression ... even different versions of ew (and fp) at the same time ..
is that what you mean?... i can even (inadvertently) open the same web in
two instances... I say inadvertently because one would not want to do that

otherwise I don't understand what you meant?
