I am currently working on a project for my company's disaster recovery
plan. They want two things, a server that is ready to go at a moments
notice and the ability to simply restore the nightly backup from the
existing exchange server. The current exchange is Exchange Server
2003 running on Windows Server 2003, both are sp1. They do not want
to use replication due to a limited WAN and they want this to be used
anytime there is a lenghty power outage or even an actual disaster and
then be able to power up the original machine and be able to go back
to business as usual.
After hours of research I have not been able to find a solution that
fits their needs, any help with this is greatly appreciated.

Well, there *is* no way to replicate, natively....it's backup/restore only.
I suggest you review the basic NTBackup Exchange procedures - it won't be
quite as simple as they hope, as you will need to do another backup &
restore the *other* direction if you've been using the backup server.

Exchange 2007 makes this easier, btw.

I would investigate the advanced recovery stragetegy of re-homing a
user's mailbox described here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125016.aspx

and database portability as described here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/ en-us/library/aa997006.aspx

The advantage of this recovery strategy is that it is much easier to
test this DR scenario without causing
downtime in your production environment. I would recommend you set
this up in a lab and have a go at it before you implement in
production.

Thank you for the information. I'm definately going to take it and
run it through my lab. If nothing else I'll have the knowledge to
backup whatever my conclusions may be.
