I am running Exchange 5.5 SP1 and have an IMS and a cc:Mail connector. When
users are added to cc:Mail and a DirSync takes place, the users SMTP name is
their cc:Mail name with no spaces. Our company standard is firstname dash
lastname. I know that I can do a Directory Export and the modify all 2000
users and the do a Directory Import,

My question: Can I take the Directory Export file and delete most of the
fields except maybe the Display Name and the E-mail Addresses fields, modify
what I want and import the abbrieviated file into Exchange.

Yes, you can. You need 4 fields:
Mode, Obj-Class, Directory Name, Email Addresses

Mode is either "change" or "modify" (from memory here, sorry)
Obj-Class is mailbox
Directory Name is... obvious
Email Addresses is a "%" separated list of the primary mail addresses.

You also may be able to modify the address generator for SMTP addresses
(don't know how it affects DirSync'd addresses though). Go to the Site/Site
Addressing/Site Addressing tab and edit the SMTP address to "%g-%l...@smh.com"
(that's percent G[iven] dash percent L[ast]). When you change this, it will
ask if you want to update all the existing recipients - choose yes, and you
can skip the Export/Import.
