I hope someone can help with this as after looking into this problem for
quite a few months has pulled up no answers.

The gist of it is various people who reply to our emails send it through
blank. Here is what I have found out.

1) The emails that are blank are always html
2) it only happens for various companies, and only various people within
those companies
3) It only comes through blank when they are replying to a message we sent,
if they reply in plain text the email comes through fine
4) The emails are not SPAM and do not contain virus
5) The emails show as blank in Outlook and Outlook Webmail

Our setup.

Our Microsoft Exchange Enterprise Server 2003 is hosted on Microsoft Server
2003 Enterprise Edition. All clients use Outlook 2003, the servers sit behind
a SonicWall firewall. We have not got software that can strip out the body of
the messsage. All servers are fully patched to the latest SP releases.

I am out of ideas, and still not sure if it is a problem at our end or not.

I am hoping someone out there has seen this problem before and can help me
out.

Regards

Craig

Try this:
Rename files outform.dat, extend.dat, frmcache.dat, spscoll.dat.
NOTE: Generally the files can be located in the folder C:\Documents and
Settings\<UserName>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\.
extend.dat -> extend.old
outcmd.dat -> outcmd.old
frmcache.dat -> frmcache.old
views.dat -> views.old

Changing Default Font for Outlook:
Go in Outlook to Tools / Options / Mail Format / Stationary and Fonts?
The Font information is also held within the registry. The registry
information that holds
the Font information for Outlook is in binary format. Also, Outlook has 3
main Font
settings, each with a complex and simple setting:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\MailSettings
Name: "ComposeFontComplex"
Type: “Hex”
Value: value is in Binary format

Name: “ComposeFontSimple”
Type: “Hex”
Value: value is in Binary format

Name: “ReplyFontComplex”
Type: Hex”
Value: value is in Binary format

Name: “ReplyFontSimple”
Type: “Hex”
Value: value is in Binary format

Name: “TextFontComplex”
Type: “Hex”
Value: value is in Binary format

Name: “TextFontSimple”

Hi Rene,

Thanks for the reply.

The only file I had was the extend.dat, I didn't have the others. For fonts
we are using Arial, nothing fancy and it has no problem with 99% of emails,
its just these problem one's. I had someone copy in my personal account in
one of the messages. On my personal account I could read the reply message
yet the same message sent to the exchange server comes though with a blank
reply. I checked the source and its as though no html gets written in the
<Body>.

I'd start by having a look at the message with a client like Outlook
Express that will read the message from the .stm file without the
content conversion that happens when you use Outlook. You can look at
the message properties and click the "Details" tab to see the entire
message that way.

It the message body is really empty then I'd ask the sender's email
admin if they can capture a couple of those messages as they leave
their system. It may be a content conversion problem at the senders
side. It may also have to do with the construction of the MIME parts.
It wouldn't be the first time I've seen mangled MIME messages.

I don't have a fix for you, although I suspect there's a weird firewall
interaction going on. You could work around the issue for now though by
setting your server to only send to those problem domains in plain text.

Out of curiosity, were the outgoing messages, which are being replied to
with blank messages, originally composed in HTML, or were they composed in
rich text and converted to HTML on the way out?

Hi Rich, I am going to lok at the messages with OE but I have a feeling they
will still be blank. I just have to get IMAP up and running first though. If
the messages are blank then it must be something to do with the way the
message is built when they reply to us. If it isn't blank I would assume it
is a problem with the outlook client.

Hi Peter,

Yes, the messages we send out are html and when they reply in html they come
though blank, pain text replies are fine.

I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks

I am hoping there are still some people reading this post as I now have full
headers from a blank and not blank email from the same person.

The one that isn't blank is a direct email to someone at our company, the
balnk message is a reply to the same person. I can't figure out what the
difference is.

Looks like a problem on the sender's side. Both messages have the same
MIME body parts -- but one has no content in them. It might be a
problem in the way the message is handled by some bit of code that
breakes down the message into its individual body parts, processes
them (spam scanner, virus scanner, policy enforcement, etc.) and then
reconstructs the MIME message.

Ask if the sender's email admin can get a copy of the message as it
leaves their server. If the body parts are empty then they'll have to
address the problem.

Hi There,

how do I set this. I though I had done it correctly but it still goes out in
html.

i did it through the "Internet Message Formats" in global settings in
Exchange system manager. Is this not correct?

I added the smtp domain. I have tried both UUEncode and MIME in plain text

Character set is US ASCII and never use Exchange RTF

All ticks are in the boxes.

Infuriating, isn't it?

Hi Rich,

Thanks for that it worked a charm. The SP was already installed so I just
had to change the registry.
