In our 2003 environment, for mailbox recovery we had a dedicated server set
up in our organization with enough space for one of the production databases.
When we needed to do a recovery of a mailbox for a user, we created the
recovery storage group on the dedicated server and restored from backup to
that system. We then used Exmerge to extract out the information we needed
and then either provided the extracted PST to the user, or imported the data
into their mailbox.
We’ve recently completed our migration to Exchange 2007 and I’m wanting to
set up a similar configuration.
Also, I’d like to use the built in export mailbox functions. However, to
use those commands to export to a PST file (our normal method), it needs to
be run on a 32 bit system with Outlook.
What I’m wondering is if I can combine these functions and use the 32 bit
version of Exchange 2007 for the recovery server. I know the 32 bit version
isn’t licensed as “production”, but since there would be no user mailboxes on
this system, would it OK to use the 32 bit version?
Thanks.
Mike O.
Rather than use the 32-bit version, it would be more natural to use a
Recovery Storage Group on one of your production mailbox servers. And
instead of using export-mailbox to create .pst files, just use some of the
native wizarded tools within the Exchange Management Console to selectively
merge mailbox data from a mailbox on the RSG into a production mailbox.
Mailbox recovery doesn't require .pst files anymore.

the 32-bit version is timebomed. For exporting mailboxes you do not need the
32-bit version but the 32bit-version of the management tools (can be
dowloaded on www.microsoft.com/download).

I know I can export with the 32 bit tools, but since I was looking at
creating a dedicated recovery server (actually, probably a VMWare virtual
machine), I was just wondering if I could combine the two functions into one
system.
I've been looking at the tools, and will be using them more for the user
mailbox recovery functions. Unfortunately, we still will need PST's for a
lot of our functions. We periodically get requests to export a former
employee's email so that their supervisor or replacement can access it.
Also, I work for a city government, and we often get records requests where
we need to supply copies of email to outside agencies or the media (or
both!), so a PST is the the only option.
why would you need to export mails wenn you have a recover server. With e2k7
a recover server is easy to handle due to the "mailbox portability feature",
wich means you can mount databases on every server. The accounts can be
moved with the move-mailbox cmdlet and the switch -configurationonly. Or you
mount the db in the Recovery Storage Group and recover the mails from there.

I know Exchange 2007 has some built in tools to move and merge recovered
mailboxes, but I work for a city government, and we have cases where we need
to provide contents of a mailbox to outside agencies or the media as "public
records" requests, so we still have to work with PST's.
