Shouldn't minus a squared number be a minus number? In Excel -2^2 = 4. To
keep it negative I have to write -(2^2). Is there a way to customize this so
that -2^2 = -4?

Thanks.

Excel documents its behavior in its help. (Yep, it's not the familiar order of
precedence.)

You found the solution.

As Dave points out, in Excel negation takes precedence over exponentiation
I not sure this is 'unusual' but the Math3 onscreen calculator does
evaluate -2 as -4 as does Maple, so he may the correct - I have gotten used
to Excel's ways
But I do know you cannot alter it
best wishes
