How do I fill in the blanks in a column with the last
preceding non-blank entry. Example: if A1 is "Jones", A2-
4 is blank, A5 is "Smith", A6-7 blank; A8 "Henry" etc. I
want A2-4 to be "Jones"; A6-7 to be "Smith", etc. I have
several hundred entries so don't want to do manual 'fill
down' for each one.

Select the entire column. Edit>Go To>Special>Blanks. When the blank cells are
highlighted, in the topmost blank cell(which will be white) type an equal(=)
sign then click with mouse in cell above. Now hit CRTL + ENTER. Done.

After you copy the cells, as Gord has suggested, you may want to change
the cell contents to values, instead of formulas:

1. Select the column
2. Choose Edit>Copy
3. Choose Edit>Paste Special
4. Select Values, click OK
