Excel 2007 balks at >7 nested IFs

I am trying to use a formula with 13 nested IFs in Excel 2007. But I get a
message that the formula "uses more levels of nesting than are allowed in the
current format" whether I am using xlsx, xlsm or xlsb. Excel 2007 is supposed
to allow up to 64 nestings but I find it balks at more than seven.

There are usually alternative ways of writing formulae to avoid
excessive nesting of IFs. Post your formula here with a description of
what you are trying to do and someone will be able to advise on other
ways of achieving the desired outcomes.

Did you open a file in xls format in Excel 2007?

Thank you very much fo your help. The file was originally xls. Saving it as
xlsx evidently did not remove the limitations on xls. I have now copied the
file into a new 2007 Workbook and my formula with 13 IF nestings (for which
no series of VLOOKUPs can substitute) works like charm!

I know this comment is old but I'm stumped. I've sort of self-taught myself
how to use Excel for work, and I'm trying to use an IF statement with 15
nested IFs. I cannot save it as xlsx because the document needs to be in a
format accessible to people with older computers. Is there a way I can get
around this by using another type of statement?

Thanks so much. I appreciate any help. If someone thinks they can I'd be
happy to send them the actual formula I am working on.
