an error message "Excel cannot complete this
task with available resources". I went into Msconfig-
startup and unchecked everything. This didn't solve the
problem. The folks at Gateway, mfg of this new computer
have a answer - "Gateway technicians are not trained on
all the advanced features of the software or hardware
Gateway sells". Since they are completely useless, I am
asking for help, please.

there were many complex graphs in the workbook, and one of the graphs
was visible on opening.
In my case, some of the calculations were performed by user defined
functions in an add-in. Unloading the add-in before opening the file
allowed me to open the file, and selecting worksheets that did not have
graphs on them before saving the file prevented recurrence of the
problem, even with the add-ins reloaded.

Still there are two things to try...
1) make sure you have enough free disk space on what ever drive
you are opening the file from ... You need double the file size
plus 5-10%
2) try to open it in safe mode so macros do not execute .. (sorry
I don't know how that works in 2002) ... if you can open it in
safe mode then look for what ever macro is causing the problem.
If you have the disc space and the file will not open is safe
mode then it has probably become corrupt...

I get a lot of calls from customers that have gone to their computer
hardware vendor trying to get help on Excel issues. I wish that they
would simply refer you to us at the Microsoft Excel Support Group.
Excel is a complex product and it is considered a support specialty
here. In other words, that's all I do and it's hard to keep up with
all the nuances of it.
Anyway, we're here if you need us. The cost is $35 an incident. If
you purchased any of the Office Suites, you get 2 free support
incidences. Once a ticket is created, we don't stop until it's
resolved. So if it's a complex issue that runs long, you can really
make out. And if the same problem occurs again, we just reopen the
ticket with no charge even if months have passed by.
There are some standard troubleshooting steps that we use time and
again. Since I don't have enough details to see an answer, I'd be
doing these to determine that your Excel was stable and it's
components were working OK. Try running through them and see if it
helps--

The next thing we do is to search the knowledge base for existing
articles. Use the text of the error message to start with and see
what you come up with. (The KB is at support.Microsoft.com.) We have
unpublished articles available also which can give us an edge. We are
not trying to withhold information but simply attempting to determine
if a KB article should be made from it based on usage and accuracy.
If enough cases are linked to them, they are published.
In defense of Gateway, they are in the business of selling computers
and solving hardware issues. Software products installed by them are
not really their domain.
