Mac Excel not holding it's "Feedback with sound" setting

I'm sure this issue has been addressed here before, but I can't find a reference to it. Even though I continue to set my Excel prefs to "Provide Feedback With Sound" it continues to default to 'no sound' when reopening a new or existing worksheet. I have a worksheet of contact data that is in columns for convenience in editing, but needs to be in rows in order to be used by Word as a mail merge data source. Well, I work where everyone uses a Mac and the common solution is to keep the old version or run both 2004 and 2008 on your machine. And when you need macros and compatibility with Windows, use 2004.
