Loss of formatting in excel

I have Excel 2007 and have files in 2003 and 07. I am frequently losing
formatting when I open a file in either format. At first I thought it was an
issue with compatability so I saved copies of prior files as 2007 versions.
When I open these files I get an error message to the effect the files are
corrupt and then I find all my formatting has gone - shading, highlights,
font etc. Details say styles and formatting files have been removed
/repaired. Does anyone else have this issue?
