Excel 2007 hangs and crashes on opening

I ran Office Diagnostics which showed no problems but I can't get Excel 2007
to open. I'm running Home & Student Version w/XP OS. This seems to happen
after my auto update downloads from MS. It would take several attempts to
open until the last update and now it won't open at all. I get a white
screen that hangs indefinitely until I close it out. Have I lost my content
and files? This was happening w/Word too but that's not an issue now. What
gives? Can someone help me? This has been going on since summer and I'm
frustrated.

click start, run, type excel /s see if you can open it in safe mode.
if yes then the problem might due to Add-in
in case cannot, you might need to re-install it.
