Truncated Y-Axis Labels in Excel 2002

chart as an object in a worksheet. I know there is something listed in the
knowledge base talking about the problem when print previewing or printing,
but that is not my problem. This has wasted a ton of time. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

information than what you have given so far. ;-)
Are you doing anything to the default labels? Changing their
orientation, font, alignment, etc.? What version of XL are you using?
For that version, are you using a particular support release? Are the
labels truncated in the default chart that XL creates, or does that
happen after you make some change to the chart? If so, what change?

In XL2002, I created a chart with numbers in the 10 trillion range for
both x and y values. The XY Scatter chart looks fine. What is the
range of numbers you are using?
You mention that you add the chart as an object in the worksheet. What
does that mean? Are you referring to the last step in the Chart Wizard
or something else?
Also, AFAIK, there has never been a 'properties' tab in the Format Axis
dialog box. There's Pattern, Scale, Font, Number, and Alignment. What
MSKB article are you referring to?

values along the y-axis, it is the label such as "Annualized Rate of
Return." The label or axis title gets cut off after "Annualized Rate o" or
something like that. Sorry for the confusion.
Your second point is correct. It is the last step in the chart wizard where
the choice is create the chart as an object or entirely new sheet. I need
it as an object inorder to paste it in MS Word.
Q214332 is one of the MS knowledge base articles I read. I can not seem to
duplicate this in XK2002.

I have this problem as well (as of today, funnily enough)
and it's not restricted to XL2000, I'm using 97 SR-1 under
NT4.0. in my case, it can also squash the last few
characters (which usually explain the units used!), rather
than just truncating the title. I have also noticed just
one other problem with my "new arrangement" - that i
cannot display system info (in Help Menu) which is a bit
odd.
My colleague is using the same and does not have this
problem. i too did not have this problem until my
computer crashed recently and everything had to be re-
loaded. i have tried to ensure that all of my display
settings are the same as my colleagues. this problem does
not occur with the very same file on his machine.
i do not know what is making the difference here, between
his and mine (and my old system). i've been using xl for
a very long time and have never come across this. i have
tried changing all settings available for axis labels and
display - i fear it runs deeper than this.
hope this info helps anyone who can help out - i too have
wasted far too much time on this.

have found a bug -- not that it helps you. To make matters worse, I
cannot reproduce it consistently :(
Personally, I suspect I didn't run into the problem earlier, in spite of
the large number of charts I create, is twofold. First, I never use
axis labels. Instead, I use text boxes -- have for many years now. A
text box gives me, IMO, better control over the formatting and spacing.
Second, most of my printing is in Word, after I copy the XL chart into
the Word document ;-)
Anyway, here are some options (again after very little testing):
(1) Minimize the problem by putting the label contents on two lines.
For example, create a y-axis label with any text. Then, replace it:
enter 'annualized return' (w/o the quotes), then SHIFT-RETURN, then 'on
investment.'
(2) Make the font size small, say 8 pt. Then, when XL enlarges it for
printing, it is still not too large.
(3) Use a text box. In a text box, move to the next line with CTRL-
ENTER.

I realise this can be done by writing the label text on a worksheet cell to
the left of the yaxis and use format, mergecells-alignment option.

is automatically aligned along the y-axis (and is *not* perpendicular to
the y-axis). If I use a text box instead, it is a question of double-
clicking the box and in the Format Text Box dialog box, in the Alignment
tab, setting the desired alignment.
The above tested with XL2000SR1 and XL2002.
