Subject: saving a lotus.123 file in excel format without getting "garbage"
Is it possible to convert a lotus.123 file into an excel file getting a
"workable" file, not a bunch of junk items like "value" instead a formula?

I have tried to save .123 files as Excel files and if something is not among
Excel's functions or other procedures, I too get a lot of junk.  I don't
think that there is any way around this problem unless you Range Value cells
that contain incompatible functions and other procedures.
