After a long time of not participating in the newsgroups I returned to
the vb.general.discussion group to ask a DOT NET question. DOT NET
currently does not exist on a computer and all I want is a way to
compile DOT NET files but do NOT want to install the IDE or anything
else DOT NET. I do not need to run the application after compile, at
least not on the machine that compiles and links it together.
Anyone worked through this in the past? Currently this 2003 DDK exists
with the following files:
03/24/2005 04:25 PM 413,696 ml.exe
Microsoft (R) Macro Assembler Version 7.10.4035
03/24/2005 04:26 PM 86,016 cl.exe
Microsoft (R) 32-bit C/C++ Optimizing Compiler Version 13.10.4035 for 80x86
07/16/2006 11:45 PM 642,552 VB_32.IDL
In fact, I'm not even sure that really is the 2003 DDK. It appears to be
a 2005 or later version based upon the dates on the files. And I seek the
VB 2007 or later files I think.
Anyone have any links or suggestions?
I'm willing to help everyone else that needs help. I hope to make this
productive and suitable for everyone that does NOT use DOT NET, like me.
It's getting cross-posted to the dotnet.languages.vb group to get what-
ever help exists there, and hopefully someone knows something about how
to get a DOT NET compiler to compile without DOT NET installed.
Thanks goes to everyone. I love you all. God bless everyone, please.

DDK is a device driver kit. The .Net Framework contains the compilers. It
would be useful to know which language the source code is writte in. The VB
compiler is called vbc.exe, usually found at
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 (or v1.1.4322)

You don't need Visual Studio but at least you need the .Net Framework.
Armin
As was pointed out to you, the .Net VB complier is included in the
.Net install, and furthermore, not surprisingly, it uses other parts
of .Net to actually work, so you'll need .Net installed to compile
.Net code.

The VB compiler (vbc.exe, etc.) is in the .NET Framework, so you'll want to
download and install it. That will also get you're the .NET class library,
which you'll also need. Same goes for the C# compiler (csc.exe). If you're
also looking for a C++ compiler, I suggest you ask in:
microsoft.public.vc.language
Invoking the compiler from the command line? Read here:

Note: I'm answering this in the dotnet.languages.vb group, so the
information provided is from that perspective.

"Not Meaning To Start Up Any Sort Of War......"
.....is EXACTLY what you wanted to do, otherwise, you wouldn't have
posted this in the microsoft.public.vb.general.discussion newsgroup...nor
would you have capitilized every instance of DOT NET, as to accent it, or
stres the fact that it is a question about .Net...solely, and is not
related, what-so-ever, to VBc.
Oooooo. I'm so broken up inside. I just don't know how I'm going to sleep

Just in case the crossposting to a not relevant group, was not observed.

I run a computer without any version of .Net installed. It means I do not
run any .Net created applications. I'm looking to be able to compile a .Net
application though. I have not quite made it very far, but I did find the
appropriate link to download .Net 2008 3.5 in an .ISO format.
It's a big file, and I'm looking for others that are interested or perhaps
have already worked through this. As I do not plan on installing .Net, just
a compiler and if I need to install some extra files to get the compiler to
work (and linker I think), then I'll be creating a list of those files.
So please do not vandalize the messages here with hatred of .Net as it gets
no one anywhere. And I need to compile some .Net applications but I do not
want to install .Net.
If this is not possible, perhaps someone from Microsoft can join in and do
the help thing here. Anyone else think this is a good idea? I'm looking for
some support to push this through to Microsoft.

Are you kidding me ?!
It's painfully obvious that you are going to get no help in the
ms.p.vb.general.discussion newsgroup for your .Net questions. You've
already been told you can't be helped.
It's also painfully obvious that you are doing nothing more than trolling
here to incite a reaction....
"An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who
posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an
online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with
the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response[1]
or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.[2]"
You can read the whole thing here:

Troll.
Yeah....and then to post the same question again and saying......
"So please do not vandalize the messages here with hatred of .Net as it
gets no one anywhere."
Sheeesh.
Install the Framework and compile. You can uninstall it afterwards. I don't
understand that you complain about a huge, free package just because it's
huge. What do you expect? If MSFT would offer 5 separate, smaller packages
instead of a big one, I swear anyone else would complain why they didn't put
it into one big package because, you now wouldn't know what is in which
package and why they made it so complicated. There's no "compilers only"
package. Live with it and be glad you don't have to buy VS for your
purposes.
I post this to the dotnet group only because it has nothing to do with
unmanged VB versions.

Your repeated references to vb.net on this Classic VB newsgroup in your
continued attempts to destroy the group by annoying its members is bringing
both yourself and Microsoft into disrepute. For someone who purports to be
an MVP you really should be ashamed of yourself, McCarthy. You are a
disgrace to yourself and a disgrace to Microsoft and if they had any sense
they would sack you immediately. I have copied this message to the vb.net
group so that the people there will know what you are up to here.
You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself. You do not deserve to be an
MVP!

Hi Bill,
Does more than one version of VB9 exist? Does Microsoft differentiate between
VB9-64 and VB9-32? I do not have .Net installed on this machine. I hesitate to
install SP3 for XP on it because I've modified the tcpip.sys to allow for more
than 10 TCP connections and things work.
Can I get some help from you, or anyone else in regards to the vbc.exe files?
Can you tell me which folder they get installed into during a normal install,
and can you do something like the following and provide a list of the files:
dir *.* /s /e >> vb9files.txt
And if you know if a folder works as a common folder, can you identify that by
both it's environmental variable and the FQPN it points to?
This is going to take a lot of time to figure all this out. Any help I can get
is greatly appreciated.
And to those that are not interested, to those that must live and continue to hate
and live in their own world of bitterness, to those that resolve themselves to
futility of thought and leave themselves in their own darkened empire, where they
glamorously perceive corrupted truths, either stay in your darkened empire and do
not step out into the light, or step out of your darkened understandings and let
your eyes see through what your hardened hearts hide. Let your senses perceive what
lost sensitivities hid away. Come to know what was hidden away in lost lusts of impure
condemnations of the innocent.
Simply stated, open your heart, come to know the love of Jesus, because a world of
darkness becomes known when you step out into a world of light, just as the sun shines
and presents the day, and a blessing of love offering ways to open your heart, and pure
deeds of truth presenting safe paths to follow. I step forth with love and present love
and provide an opportunity to those that deny me, I offer you with the ability to see
the truths that you refused to see in the past. Leave your lusts for impurity behind
and move forward. Leave any and all ignorance behind.
In your anger, do not sin. In fact, do not even let anger enter. Step forward out of
anger and feel the blessings that surround you, the blessings that come to you through
the truth and love presented here via UseNet.
When the sun goes down, do not let the darkness consume you.
When you can not see the truth, step forth out of your darkness, because it is not
the lack of the sun that places the darkness around you, but a loss of love and a
loss of truth, and it ends up as YOUR OWN desire to not help others. Do not let any
bitter talk, anger, malice, slander or rage come from your keyboard. Show kindness
and compassion, and allow UseNet to lighten your mind instead of encouraging thoughts
of darkness which consume you.
Spread the message of love around and help all those that request such help. I hereby
ask for help and feel no shame in asking for it.
I offer my blessings to everyone.
The answer is no, but for answers concerning the .Net Framework Development
platforms you will be better served posting to a dotnet or vsnet newsgroup.
That is where the largest majority of knowledgeable .Net developers hang
out. You are more likely to recieve more than one response and perhaps just
as importantly have those responses reviewed by knowledgeable users.

I know from another group that Bill is very busy with VB10, so I do not know
if he sees your message.
However, why don't you not install VB Express 2008, it is freeware
There is still VBC but that is very archaic because of that freeware Express
version now.
Be aware that VB9 is the name of the version of the Visual Basic language
specification.
It is sold in more Microsoft development products named Visual Studio 2008
and in an Express version
In that you can set for what version you want to build.

The best thing to do would be to download Visual Studio and try it out. If
you have at least 1GB of RAM (preferably 2 GB) then also download Virtual PC
2007 and run Visual Studio in there. Unfortunately though, VPC only supports
32 bit... For 64 bit OS'es you need Hyper-V or VMWare etc.
As to paths, the 32 bit path to vbc.exe woudl be something like:
%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\vbc.exe
whilst the 64 bit would be:
%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\vbc.exe
If you're questions are more to do with VB7 or later (the .NET versions of
VB), best to ask in the .Net forums such as :
microsoft.public.dotnet.languages.vb
You can do this on your own after installing the Framework. BTW, the
Framework is required to compile your application. You can find it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7&displaylang=en
(look for "full package" at the bottom)
It wouldn't make sense to know which files you need anyway because, where do
you get them from? It is not legal to get only a part of the whole package
from anybody else. So, do yourself a favor and spend an hour (or two) to
download and install it instead of having a discussion that takes mutliple
times longer and leads to nowhere.
