Confused!

HELP! I'm running Windows XP Home Ed. with Service Pack 2. I'm run into one
dead-end after another trying to correct this problem. I've changed my
monitor, installed a new graphic card (with latest drivers), re-installed the
latest DirectX and STILL get the following errors in the DirectX Diagnostic
Tool when I run the TestDirect 3D:

Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT =
0x80004005 (Generic failure)
Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT =
0x8876086c (error code)
Direct3D 9 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT =
0x8876086c (error code)

Some 3D application run while others won't run at all! My DirectX Files tab
says that there are "No Problems Found" and all my files seem intact. WTF is
going on here?!?!

It would be possible that you got a bummer graphics card, take it back and
try another. Be very careful installing the card so you don't get static
electricity to the card itself. And eve taking the card out and putting it
back in case it didn't make proper connections.

I am also experiencing the exact same issue. It's driving me crazy also.
Everything I've tried so far has been a dead end. My problems started when I
updated my video drivers, but even uninstalling and reinstalling the original
drivers has not resolved the issue.

Hi! I've had the exact same problems. I have an ATI X800 video card,
and when
I installed the new drivers, lots of games didn't ran anymore. I tryed
to reinstall
directx, but it did not help. (DXDiag said "Failure at step 8"...)
So I finally figured out, that the new Catalyst drivers (7.9 and 7.10)
are guilty!
I reinstalled and older version (7.8), and now everything works fine!
So I
recommend you to do this too. Previous Catalyst drivers:

I hope I helpd! :)
ps: sorry for my bad english!!! ;)

I have an ATI x1950 card. I was also able to get rid of the errors and run
my games by completely uninstalling the card and reinstalling it with the
original drivers. I agree that the updated catalyst drivers were to blame
for this problem. I did contact ATI for support, but they were not much
help. None of the fixes they suggested worked. Only reinstalling the card
with the old drivers solved the problem.

I was having the same problems and I did the same thing as the others and the
catalyst drivers were to blame. Thanks for the good and helpful posts
everyone!

I had the exact same problem with a Radeon 9700 pro card running Catalyst
7.11 and 7.12 drivers. Rolling back to the 7.8 driver fixed it - thank you!
All I had to do was download the older 7.8 video driver and run the
installation file - no uninstall or convoluted repair procedure necessary.
Thanks again!

AT LAST!! After iTunes stopped showing the carousel album cover
display, discovering that the 3D screensavers (Windows own) wouldn't
load, and getting the error messages when testing Direct 3D, this did
the trick easily and without pain! Many thanks to all for the info,
and esp. zala for the excellent link xxx

Unbelievable, I've had this problem for ages but thought it was due to a
faulty DX9c install..

It manifested when I tried to play COD4 and the monitor started clicking
like it couldn't pick a resolution.

I then used DXdiag to test DirectDraw and it resulted in the exact same
error messages.

I remember upating my graphics card drivers in frustration (ATI 800XT Plat),
then My GF installed Mediaplayer 10 (somehow) and she thought that DirectX
had been updated... and fixed the matter...

Obviously this is not the case as what must have happened was that I
randomly installed another older graphics driver I must have had on my drive
in frustration and pure luck fixed it..

I recently lost my C drive and came up against the same problem, which led
me to this thread.

Thanks for the advice (I'm just off to try it, fingers crossed)

Please try and spread the word around ATI sites regarding this.. I can't
believe ATI have been releasing useless drivers for the last year nearly, the
latest one I had installed before I read this was 8.45 !!!

Lucky guy ...
I'm running Sapphire HD 2600 XT AGP, and got unstability problems with
latest AGP fix drivers ( ! )
I uninstalled all ATI drivers => No more DirectX
Reinstalled original drivers with CD => Same bad result :-( :-( :-(
If anybody has better experience with same kind of card ... I take solutions
(all better than reinstalling all Windows)

Solved by installing latest fix : 9-6_agp-hotfix_xp32_dd_ccc_20090616_2444
from Sapphire site, after reinstall of original drivers ...
Well I still donnot know why DirectX couldn't find any more graphics drivers
