Epilog Summit Drivers

Hi All,

Excuse the possible duplication - not sure which group this one belongs in
...

We have an Epilog Summit laser engraving machine which, although a few years
old (about 9) has been well cared for and maintained, and so is still quite
functional for many tasks. We'd like to upgrade our computer systems here
to XP for all the obvious reasons (stability, security, management etc.) but
the drivers are only Win9x compatible!

Over the past year and a half, I've sent countless emails to the
manufacturer (Epilog Corporation in Denver), pleading with them to write an
XP driver or even loan me the source code to get someone here (in Australia)
to write one. I've said I will sign whatever they want me to sign to
protect their intellectual property.

I've said I would then gladly -give- them back the driver for them to
sell/distribute to their clients with the same machines so everyone wins!
Unfortunately, they have said no on both counts and, despite my best
efforts, we look like being left out in the cold on this one.

Any ideas, I'm really in a bind on this one?

When was the last time you looked at their web site? I see that they support

Thanks for replying. Yes, I wish! I make sure to check their web site
every few weeks. I've also contacted them directly about this issue.

It turns out that the driver you describe is written for a different/newer
Summit model. I should have said, but we are version 3.0 and,
unfortunately, further down the page they note "The Windows XP/2000 print
driver for the Summit is only available for Summits using version 5.1 or 5.3
firmware". Almost there, but it definitely doesn't work with our machine.

Apologies for jumping in....
If you can leave a dedicated win9x computer to control this machine, I'd suggest
to do so. There is a zintillion of options to control it remotely from XP.

Thanks, Pavel. Yes, I see how that would work. The laser machine driver
runs from CorelDraw, which means installing both on the Win9x machine. I
guess we'd prefer to keep everything XP for security and manageability etc.,
but if nothing else works, its nice to know we have a backup plan.

I was hoping we could either adapt the driver (easily the most preferable,
but I gather not possible without source code) or have a virtual Win9x
machine on one of the XP boxes, if possible.

So you see, keeping win98 also avoids compatibility issues with Coreldraw.
Virtual win9x will work only if your machine is connected thru serial or LPT port, or ethernet,
and tolerates additional latency of virtual machine.
