I am running Windows XP on a computer that has a built in sound card.
Everything else runs fine, but the computer doesn't even recognize that it
has sound capabilities ( no sound icon on the taskbar at startup ). However,
when I access the device manager it recognizes the device and says it's ready
to use, though anything applying to using the device is greyed out. I'm
assuming this is a driver problem since the device seems to be regonized, but
no driver.

How would I find which driver I need, download, and install it?

This is a driver development forum.

That said, if you don't know the manufacturer of your sound card or mother
board, it will be difficult to manually find the correct drivers. If you
have any of the setup discs from whoever made your computer, those should
have the drivers, or at least a place to start looking.

Have you tried just selecting "Update driver..." from device manager and
included Windows Update in the search?
