When the current hardware is unplugged and plugged into a different USB port
the sequence of dialog boxes to install the drivers comes up again. This
happens for all the ports, but only once. Is there a simple fix in the
install of the drivers to stop this? Or somethig that can be done in the
registry? (The drivers and hardware are not going to be changed in the near
future.)

Depending upon the type of device, this only happens when the device does
not provide a serial number or doesn't indicate that it has a serial number
or in some cases it is not a WHQL signed driver.

if your device provides a unique serial number, this behavior will no longer
show up and the same device instnace will be used from port to port

Fix the device firmware to maintain the serial number in the USB descriptors
properly.

For now, you have no serial number.
