Why can't I download clip art from Microsoft?

I am using Office 2003 (Word 2003, specifically) and FrontPage 2003, and
Windows XP. For some reason in the past few months, I cannot seem to get any
clip art from the Microsoft Design Gallery. If I use the selection basket,
then try to download it, it runs me past the "End-User License Agreement",
then back to the clip art page, but the Clip Organizer won't open and the
basket empties. I used to do choose several images, then download them all
at once. Now it won't hold anything in the basket.
If I try to copy and paste, the image won't copy, either. I have emptied
Temp Internet files, deleted cookies, changed my security settings. Nothing
works! Does anyone have any ideas that will work? I really miss being able
to get these images, as I need them. Oh! AND, some of the images in my clip
organizer that I had previously downloaded are "unavailable" now, too.

I tried several times to reply to you, Mary, but couldn't get the reply
button to do anything. I was about to think I needed to start a NEW question.

I read both of the articles, and followed the instruction in regard to
compacting my Organizer. It works some better; but there are still times
when the internet sourced clip art will not paste, or drag, into my document.

The error message, when I get one, (and it isn't all the time) is more to
the effect that the source is not available. I notice that the clip art that
is downloaded from Design Gallery, usually has a little Internet symbol down
in one corner. Those are the ones that won't always work, then; so it's as
if they never really downloaded.

I've tried everything you suggested, but I cannot copy and paste from the
web site to the document. Nor can I put it into the basket for downloading.
It will accept only one check mark, and when I click to go to the next page,
by the time it is opened, it says there is nothing in my basket.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the security issues. At one
point, my husband could at least copy and paste the clip art; but, now that
he's added the service packs, he is having the same problem. Any more
suggestions?

I assume you have gone through the Active X page...
http://office.microsoft.com/templates/axinstall.aspx?

This is from the help on the clipart page

If you are running Microsoft Windows® XP with Service Pack 2, it is possible to
disable or enable ActiveX controls by using the Manage Add-ins command on the Tools
menu in Internet Explorer.

The Microsoft Office Template and Media Control may have been disabled. If so, you
cannot automatically download clip art and media or templates on Office Online, or do
practice sessions in online training courses on Office Online. To enable the control:
In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Manage Add-ons.

Select Microsoft Office Template and Media Control in the list of controls.
If you do not see that control listed, click the arrow on the Show box at the top of
the Manage Add-ons dialog box, and then select Add-ons that have been used by
Internet Explorer. Then select Microsoft Office Template and Media Control in the
list of controls.
Under Settings, click Enable. You may see a message saying that you need to restart
Internet Explorer for the change to take effect. Click OK, and then click OK again.

You might have success by including Microsoft in your trusted zone

To add the Microsoft Office Online Web site to your list of trusted sites:
On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options, and then click the
Security tab.
Click the Trusted Sites icon, and then click Sites.
Clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.
In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type http://office.microsoft.com, and then
click Add.
Click OK twice.

Actually, I had already done all of that. Everything is set to trusted site
and the Office Template and Media Control is enabled. However, when I try to
copy and paste OR download, it takes me past that Active-X page (which is
already installed), and I usually end up in an "endless loop". It never
copies the art work into anything. It just sends me back through that page,
and when I hit the "continue" button, it goes back to the clip art page.
It's crazy!

I did find where I can use my Microsoft Clip Art Gallery by using the insert
Object. That surprised me, since it used to come up with insert, picture,
then Clip Art. And, it seems to work better (more clip art is available),
using the insert Object method.

When I insert picture and bring up the clip art in the side window of Word
or Excel, etc., it acts like it is going to work, then pops up saying it is
an unsupported format and won't paste it in.

Is there a chance that my hardware firewall is causing the problem of
downloading clip art? I know it affects my using my webcam in Messenger
chats. Is that what the culprit is for downloading from the Design Gallery?
If so, then I'm stuck!

Thanks for your keeping on giving me suggestions, though. Something just
MIGHT work. It's worth a try!

Do you have Norton?
Disable script blocking and in Norton Options disable Office Plug-Ins.
Maybe this

Mary,
That finally did it!

I do not have Norton, as I use McAfee; but I went in and changed the
security to disable script blocking. Then I found a note from McAfee in
reference to another setting that might need changed in Internet Explorer 6
(with Windows XP SP2 updates), and made that change as well.

Now I am able to download all the clip art I want (which goes into my Clip
Art Organizer--though, I could have set it to go into the Clip Gallery).
I cannot copy and paste the clip art directly into Word; but I can open the
document and have the web page up, then just drag the clip into the document.

THANKS SO MUCH! If you hadn't "stuck with me", I'd never have figured it
out. And, since I work with customers on issues like this, I really needed
to know for them, as well as myself. I kept thinking there had to be a
setting that was still blocking the action, but didn't find it until you
pointed me in the direction of McAfee. (Oddly enough, I think I had disabled
Virus Scan, to see if it would help--but it didn't. So, I'm thinking it took
the combination of the change in my settings in IE, as well as in the Virus
Scan itself.)

In case someone who has McAfee Anti-Virus and Internet Explorer 6.x--open
the Virus Scan, click on the Help files (should be a little question mark in
upper right corner of the open window), then go to the Index tab, type in
"Security settings, Internet Explorer" and when you have that displayed,
follow the instructions given.

Hey Rebecca, Happy to hear about your success. I didn't know McAfee had the same
issue as Norton. It is good to know. I am saving your message. I'm sure this will
help someone else. Thanks for the heads up and thanks for the feedback.

I am hoping that Mary will see this, again, because: today I tried to go
online and download clips and it DIDN'T WORK!?! Here I'd thought we had
solved this issue, and suddenly it is not working again. I did get the SP2
critical update installed, the other day; so I went back through the process
of everything, once again--nothing has been changed that I can detect. But,
now it won't recognize when I put anything into the basket for downloading,
nor will it allow me to copy and paste. It acts like it doesn't even
recognize my computer.
So, Mary, or someone--can you tell us what is going on? I will address
"heatherbean" in the McAfee issue, but at this point it may not help. McAfee
directions are:
1) Choose the "VirusScan options" by right-clicking on your lower right
McAfee icon in the task bar [usually across the bottom of your screen] --Do
NOT go through McAfee's Security Center, as it will direct you to an entirely
different set of help files.
2) Click on the Help files (little blue question in upper right of the
window), and when that opens, it will probably default to be showing the
"index" tab listing--if not; choose the Index tab.
3) type in the search bar: security settings, internet explorer
4) hit the "display" button toward the bottom of that window, to open
that particular help file, and
5) you will find further instructions on the Internet Explorer 5.x or
IE 6.x, for changing the security settings
It's a good idea to close all your programs, shut down the computer and
then start it back up again, before trying. I would even suggest emptying
the Temporary Internet files, as well, including any cookies. Start with as
"clean a slate" as possible, in other words. I hope it works for you!

As I said, that all helped me, initially. Until I tried again, after the
last automatic SP2 critical update. If anyone has other suggestions, I will
welcome them.

Hi Rebecca,
Have you cleared your cache? In IE, tools, Internet Options, delete files.
There is the Office Service Pack

Description of Office 2003 Service Pack 1
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;842532

You may have to go through the ActiveX control again
http://office.microsoft.com/templates/axinstall.aspx?

Windows XP service pack made some changes:

Put Microsoft.com into your trusted zone

To add the Microsoft Office Online Web site to your list of trusted sites:
On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options, and then click the
Security tab.
Click the Trusted Sites icon, and then click Sites.
Clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.
In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type http://office.microsoft.com, and then
click Add.
Click OK twice.

I had gone back through all of that, and everything was still set like I had,
before. I finally shut the computer down (just after dumping the temporary
internet cache), and went back online, and everything worked fine, again.
This is getting a bit "nutty"--but I think I've got the hang of it, and will
be able to get it working again, if somehow it quits. I have noticed that
there are times the web site doesn't respond quite the same, so suspect I was
also fighting a "heavy traffic" time. Anyway, it is all working, now.
Thanks, again!
(Hopefully the other person who wrote in was able to get it to work, as well!)
